When you hear the word "networking", what does that mean to you? More importantly, how do you feel when you think about going out to "network"?

Whether you run your own business or work for someone else, one of the goals we all possess is creating a client base that will help grow the business. Networking is a way of meeting people and exchanging information. When I think if networking, however, I see it as a "schmooze and move-on" approach. I don't think any of us likes to be schoomzed.

We are looking for value when it comes to our business relationships. "Connecting" with our friends and associates brings a feeling of trust and an attitude of wanting to serve each other, in a way that benefits everyone. If I trust the person I am working with, I will surely refer business their way, creating a symbiotic relationship versus an "it's about winning" competitive approach to business.

Which approach do you want to take? There are so many ways to "connect" with new and existing business partners. Create your Team 100. This is a list of people, that work in various businesses, in which you value and would refer someone to their services. Remember to connect with these people on a regular basis, have lunch, share a cup of coffee or send a note to catch up on new developments and interests. The real value comes from sincerity. Rather than thinking of how you can get ahead through a specific relationship, ask yourself what you can do to help grow the other person's business.

You will receive greater benefits from true connections rather than networking moments.
