The Importance of Parent Orientation

 By: Clara McCleen
Much is talked about the importance of school in a child's life. But it is equally important for the parents to get involved in the school activities and play an active role in their child's development through their crucial formative years. Parent orientation including interaction with teachers, knowledge about the functioning of the school and a deeper understanding about their child's psyche also helps them forge deeper relationship with their kid, while helping the kid gain in confidence and appreciate the value of learning.

School occupies a good amount of a child's life, from class and after school activities to building relationships and homework. It's a time to grow and learn, a time to socialize and form relationships with peers. Needless to say, school is very important for kids of all ages, as it provides them with the discipline and social networking skills that they will need their entire lives.

That said, it's important for parents to know what's going on in their child's school; who the teachers are; how the school runs; what the school's teaching philosophy and ethos is; basically everything about the school so that they can stay involved in their child's lives and ensure that they can help them with their school work.

Parent orientations are extremely beneficial, not just for the parents but also for the teachers. It's important to know who is teaching your kid, just as it's important for teachers to know the parents in case any issues come up. In the end, it's all about the children, and establishing a solid parent-to-teacher relationship is required to get the highest results from the entire educational process.

More than relationship building, though, parent orientation enables parents to learn about the curriculum and how the school runs so that they can have both peace of mind and a deeper understanding of what their child is doing everyday. Then, if their child is having some issues or simply talking about a fun time they had with a friend on the playground, the parent knows the background of the school and can truly empathize with their child. This only creates a stronger bond and brings families closer together.

Parent orientations also encourage parents to become involved, creating a community. Parent Teacher Associations are very prominent in many schools throughout the US, as they are open avenues through which parents can become active participants in their child's lives. And when it comes down to it, that's what it's all about: helping your child grow into a mature adult that can one day give back to society in a positive light.

By staying with them and close to them throughout some of their most formative years, parents are able to foster a stronger relationship with their child and help them grow. Parent orientations are great ways for parents to get involved and stay close with their children, helping them to gain confidence and appreciate the value of learning.
