Medical sales itself is a phrase which can be used to cover many guises from the sale of pharmaceutical products to equipment, disposables and devices which are often referred to as healthcare sales. Medical sales in the pharmaceutical industry is often referred to as 'ethical' sales, referring to the fact that the industry is very tightly regulated. Medical sales jobs can also come with a range of variations, all really referring to the same job. territory business manager, territory manager, medical representative, primary care representative, GP/Hospital representative, medical salesman, key account manager, healthcare sales representative, the list goes on!

Healthcare sales jobs is normally a term used to label any form of medical sales which doesn't involve pharmaceutical products. Healthcare sales jobs can be divided into capital equipment sales (e.g. machines, monitors etc) , medical device sales (e.g. pumps, syringe drivers), woundacre sales (bandages and dressing) and equipment sales (e.g. surgical tools).

Regional Business Manager, or RBM is just one title of several to describe 1st line pharmaceutical sales managers. Other alternatives of this are Regional Manager (RM) Regional Sales manager (RSM), Area Sales Manager (ASM), District Sales Manager (DSM-an American variant), and Business Unit Manager (yes that's BUM)

Hospital sales jobs can attract an wide variety of titles to keep you on your toes. Titles can range from Hospital representative to Hospital specialist, key account manager, Healthcare sales specialist, Area sales manager and Hospital business manager.

Marketing jobs are a simpler affair with jobs titles being in one of two variants a) marketing titles such as marketing assistant, Marketing manager and b) product manager titles such as assistant product manager of group product manager.

NHS roles come with a number of variants in their title. Probably the most common is NHS Liaison manager, but also you will find Business Development Manager, Healthcare Business manager, Key account manager and many more.

Generics medical sales, which can involve selling large portfolios of over 100 products into wholesalers and buying groups can also be labelled with a large numbers of options for alternative labels. Some of the most common are OTC sales representative, Key account Manager, National Account manager, Account manager.

The role that heads up medical sales teams has various titles, perhaps the most frequently used one is NSM (National Sales Manager) but it can also be billed as Sales Director or Head of Sales.

To many people looking at medical sales it can all be a bit confusing, for example, a nurse comes from an environment with a very clearly defined hierarchy which has no ambiguity in job titles, everybody knows the ward sister is senior to the RGN on the ward, and everybody knows what they do from their title. The only real explanation of why medical sales has such a large variation in titles for what are essentially the same roles is that companies have tried to use the titles as a means of differentiating their particular role, which one would think was a bit shallow!
