As new technological advances become part of everyday life, people start trying new things to keep up with trends. One rapidly growing technology is VoIP or voice over internet protocol. VoIP is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular phone line. VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. The Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed for data networking. The success of IP in becoming a world standard for data networking has led to its adaption to voice networking.

When you call a telephone land line, the signal is converted to a telephone land line signal. To use VoIP service, you must have a high speed internet connection. This comes specifically through a cable modem or high speed service like DSL or a local area network. Many consumers currently have high speed internet or DSL connections, so this doesn't create a need for new equipment when switching their phone service to VoIP.

VoIP has become popular largely because of the cost advantages to consumers over traditional telephone networks. Most Americans pay a flat monthly fee for local telephone calls and a per-minute charge for long-distance calls. VoIP calls can be placed across the Internet. Most Internet connections are charged using a flat monthly fee structure. Using the Internet connection for both data traffic and voice calls can allow consumers to eliminate one of their monthly payments. In addition, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance. For International calling, the monetary savings to the consumer from switching to VoIP technology can be enormous.

Of course with this new technology in the market, there are several providers available. The various providers can be compared to find the one that's right for you. Prices on this service vary and most providers offer a special introductory price that allows you to try the service for the first month. Shop around with the various providers and find the one that fits your needs.

Another great benefit of VoIP is that you can pick your phone number area code. This can be especially beneficial to those that make multiple monthly calls to family members in a certain area. By choosing your own area code, those that call you from that area code don't incur any long distance charges. You can also keep your current phone number if you like. Many providers allow you to see if your desired are code is available online. The amazing thing about VoIP is you can usually try it out for a month before you have to fully commit to the service. That's a great way to see if the service meets your expectations. Also, the low monthly rates take the guess work out of your monthly phone bill.
