Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is vital for any website so you can feature highly in search engine results for your chosen field. There are two aspects of SEO - onsite optimization and offsite optimization. Below you will find some examples of important things to consider when optimizing your site.

Onsite Optimization

Meta-Tags- Meta tags are an html coding designed to describe the keywords related to your site. They fit in the header section of a website. It is important to ensure the keywords you pick are related to your site content. If you get caught out by search engines "keyword stuffing" you may be dropped from their website lists.

Keywords - This is related to your site content, as well as your meta-tags. You should make sure that you regularly use your keywords or phrases throughout your site. This establishes your site as one with relevant content

Headings - Careful use of headlines can make it easy for search engines to find, and navigate your site. It also makes your site easier to read when your target audience finds your site.

Site Links - it is important to ensure that your site is linked well to make for easy maneuverability. Also make sure there are no broken links!

Offsite Optimization

Backlinks - as well as having a well designed and thought out website, it is vital to raise the "importance" of your website. Backlinks are other sites that link to your website. This can be a one-way link where a website links to yours, but you do not link to that website in return. Two-way links are when a site links to you and you link to them.

Articles - writing articles related to your site content can be very helpful in promoting your website, and promoting yourself as an expert in your field. The added benefit of writing articles is that you can place a link to your website in the author biography. This is a handy one-way link.

Directories - A good way to get backlinks is to submit your site to relevant directories. The internet is full of directories so you must ensure that the sites you submit to be relevant.

If you are developing a website, you must engage in the vital work of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) if you want to feature highly in search engine results for your chosen field. There are two aspects of SEO- onsite optimization and offsite optimization. This article has shown you some of the basics you need to consider in search engine optimization, and given you an idea of the areas where you need to engage in further study.
