The Uses of Structural Steel Detailing

Structural steel detailing creates detailed drawings for steel erectors and fabricators, including drawings, plans, estimates, reports and other necessary documents for the erection and manufacture of steel members. A lot of different varieties of steel members are included in structural steel detailing, including steel handrails, columns, braces, trusses, metal decking, stairs, beams and even stairs.

And this is why structural steel detailing is very vital in a wide range of businesses involved in manufacturing and construction, such as naval shipbuilding, building construction, plants constructions and other similar sectors. Anything that is big enough to need structural steel will have to get structural steel detailing work. Further, structural steel detailing is an easy way to integrate the inputs of fabricators, architects, engineers and other professionals. Shop drawings and erection drawings are the two most common types of structural steel detailing work. Erection drawings show its users, the steel erectors, how to and where to place manufactured steel members; it includes very detailed data on all the necessary processes like installing wedge anchors, bolting and welding

Shop drawings, on the other hand, are utilized to pinpoint the requirements for fabricating each steel member and are primarily used by steel fabricators to make these members. Structural steel detailing usually has information on specifications, dimensions, sizes, materials needed, and other similar information.

That is why various organizations like the American Institute of Steel Construction have published standards for structural steel detailing, to ensure that it is accurate and correct.

Structural steel detailing is more often done with the help of computers using programs called computer aided design software like AutoCAD. Nowadays, these drawings are usually also extended into 3D modeling by using the same.

Complex as it is, structural steel detailing is an important process. To be a successful detailer, you should have knowledge in geometry, trigonometry, drafting, drawing, logic, reasoning as well as above average communication and visualization skills in order to create accurate drawings that are delivered on time. A general knowledge of general engineering and working knowledge in steel fabrication also helps. In the United States, most structural steel detailers are self taught, or have only a general certification program that touches on CAD operation. Few, if any, colleges offer degree programs in structural steel detailing. Because of these, it is very difficult to maintain a productive and inexpensive staff that can handle detailing work around the clock. Fortunately, quite a handful of design companies offer other businesses cheap and reliable structural steel detailing services. Now it is easier for you to have detailing staff that is both convenient and easy on the wallet.
