The Vegetable Garden Design Of The Future Is Your Whole Yard As A Vegetable Garden

Vegetable garden design is being changed by situations outside the garden. Mainly the price of oil, inflation and the financial situation. With oil over $100 a barrel it seems likely if you can’t afford to fill your car up with gas then you can’t afford to fill up the lawnmower. This will drive vegetable garden design into a situation where there will be no lawn to mow.

But the big one is inflation because every time you go to the supermarket and see how much more expensive everything is – this situation will drive you into turning your yard into as much food as it will produce. So vegetable garden design is changing away from the old style of the vegetable garden bed to the whole yard vegetable garden with a few walkways to the garden shed, the clothesline and possible an outside table and chairs.

With this new vegetable garden design there are a couple of ways to go to do with shading. You can either have all the tall plants in one part of the garden divided up by the walkways or you can have them scattered throughout the whole garden.

Another option is to start with the tallest plants like sweet corn and move down to the smallest plants like radishes – so the whole garden slops from tallest to smallest. I prefer the easy option of scattering everything around in the garden. This way there is less chance of pests jumping from one plant to the next.

Also this way your whole garden is changing with the seasons and I like that idea of change. So the new vegetable garden design seems to be very flexible and changes with the seasons.
