Tips To Help Children Regard Summer Schools Positively

 By: Kathryn Dawson
While most summer schools people attend to are boring and uneventful, these do not have to be the same for every child. Summer schools can be so much fun if only it was held in another venue that would be able to replace the school ambience with something more leisurely while offering a group accommodation to a number of people with same interests. Also, they should be similar to summer camps where there are facilities for various sports events. Imagine learning and honing talent in sports all in one place. It may not be the ideal summer getaway as it is not exactly a holiday but is perfect for parents who want their kids to actually enjoy the summer months.

The first tip is to educate them and have an adult conversation as to why they are required to attend summer school. Note that kids are aware that they have failed, the reason for attending summer school, but there is no need to rub this in their faces. The topic that is to be touched on is the benefits of going to summer school such as meeting new people, learning better communication and social skills, learning new sports and learning lessons for the next school year in advance. In every benefit there is, expand, elaborate and cite examples as to where this will be useful in the future. If you find that your children are generally shy around their classmates, this might just change miraculously if they are around a different bunch of people. In the most likely case, learning a new sport that they find to excel at should boost their self esteem and confidence when interacting with their peers. The benefits can be endless if you pick the right school.

In looking for the right school to enrol your child in, ask for his input. Show him pictures of the accommodations and facilities. Remember that it is your child that is going to summer school and live within those premises for a few months and not you. To maximise the investment you spend on enrolment, it is important that children are comfortable with the accommodations and actually want to live in them. Otherwise, you can be sure that not only will they hate it but will also learn very little by the end of summer school. If you want your children to truly learn, then you will have to understand that they will have to want it and be excited about it.

Once you and your child have searched for the right schools, make a site trip and make sure to take your child along with you. Take your time in looking at accommodations and facilities and ask if he or she likes it. Sometimes you do not even have to ask. You can immediately sense in an expression whether a person is impressed with the place or not. Make a thorough inspection similar to when you book an expensive hotel room for the night.

Now with the number of schools you have visited, do not forget to ask for the course description and any extra lessons they have to offer. Review these over with your child and leave the decision entirely up to them. More often than not, children will make an informed decision based on the information you have gathered and what they have seen in the site visit.

Lastly, if there are friends of you children that are required to enrol in summer school as well, ask their parents if they would like to enrol their children in the same school. They may not have heard of it with the number of summer schools around. There are schools that offer group accommodation to a fixed number of students. This makes it more enjoyable for your child and his or her friends. Plus, they can fully maximise the use of the facilities for various sports events they want to try their hand at. This helps in promoting friendly competition and sportsmanship among peers, a value as equally important as education. Now, your children will feel that they have just checked in at a world class resort that offers complimentary lessons. This helps eliminate the feeling that they get to miss their summer holiday. In fact, they just might be experiencing the best summer holiday of their lives.
