A conservatory typically is a room or set of rooms built into the side of a house that allows the occupants to enjoy the outdoors without being exposed to bad weather, uncomfortable temperatures, or insects. A conservatory almost always has big windows to bring sunlight and viewscapes into the space. In some cases, conservatories are made almost entirely of glass, with strong but minimalist structural support. Frequently a conservatory functions as a place where tender plants that would not survive outdoors can be cultivated.

Depending on where it is and, to some degree, on its size, a conservatory may be called by any one of a number of names, including “patio,” “sunroom,” “Florida room,” or a “solarium.” The word “conservatory” is most frequently used in the United Kingdom.

Conservatories probably originated in the tradition of the front porch, or wrap-around veranda, on farmhouses and large houses in town, where families would congregate in the evenings to relax and enjoy the weather. Over time, conservatories have evolved into enclosed spaces that still bring the outdoors inside.

In some cases, a conservatory is incorporated into the design of the house when it’s built, but it’s not uncommon for homeowners to add one at a later date. Conservatories can be built to complement almost any architectural style and can incorporate charming and compelling details like domes, copulas, stained glass windows, and skylights.

Regardless of whether they’re original construction or add-ons, conservatories may look simply like extensions of the existing building, made from the same brick and trim, or they may be dramatically different, made from bent copper or steel ribs with soaring glass windows, and fitted out with tile or stone floors.

An add-on conservatory may be designed by an architect, or it may be start its life as a greenhouse kit that the home owner assembles him/herself on the side of the house. From the simplest to the most elaborate, conservatories all act as transitional spaces between the indoors and the outdoors.

The type and style of conservatory you choose to build should reflect the way you want to use the space, your personal taste, and your budget. If you really want the conservatory to look like it’s always been part of your house, then you should carry through with the same materials and design sensibility. If you’re looking for something more individualistic, and you have the pocketbook to pay for it, the sky is really the limit.

No matter what design they choose, many people who add conservatories to their homes soon find they prefer them to all the other rooms. The conservatory offers its occupants the pleasure of being outdoors without the discomforts. If plants are growing in the conservatory, the air in the room often will be damp and inviting, smelling of water and earth. In colder climates, conservatories can become places to enjoy the winter landscapes in privacy and comfort. The rain may fall, the snow may pile up, but the occupant of the conservatory will be able to appreciate the views from its windows all year round.
