Every year the Viennese opera ball attracts over 5000 people. It is the biggest cultural meeting point in Austria and it has quickly become a big promoter of the Austrian tourism and economy. Half of its visitors travel to Austria especially because of this special event. 180 dancing couples from Austria and some foreign countries take part in the big opening ceremony, which is traditionally organised by the oldest dancing school in Vienna. Afterwards, when they hear the words "Alles Walzer!", all the couples in the ball room start to dance.

The tradition of the ball goes all the way back to 1814/15, which was the time of the Vienna Congress. In the year 1877 the ball took place for the first time in the Vienna Staatsoper, which is now one of Vienna's most important buildings. During the Second World War the ball didn't take place and large parts of the Vienna Staatsoper were destroyed by the bomb attacks of the allied forces. Another interruption took place during the Gulf war in 1991 because the security of the foreign state guests couldn't be guaranteed.

In 2005, the whole Vienna Staatsoper was declared a non-smoking-zone. Since then the ball is absolutely smoking-free. The night of ball, the every single floor and room of the Vienna Staatsoper is open to the guests, so that there is enough space for the guests to dance. Restaurants, Bars and even Casinos can be found inside the building during the big ball. The Catering is organised by one of the most famous deli in Vienna.

The Austrian public broadcasting channel covers the whole evening with live interviews directly from the ball. Even though there are usually about 5000 people on the ball, celebrities have no chance to hide. Through the TV live-coverage they can be spotted on the screen in most Austrian and even foreign living rooms.
