Have you left your house recently without your cell phone? Do you get that panicked feeling at being without your lifeline to the world? As I hopped in my car the other day without my cell phone, I thought I would just be gone for an hour or so I really didn’t need to climb the stairs back up to my apartment and get it. It turned out to be true, but as I drove down the street I started to get a worried feeling in the pit of my stomach. What will I do if the car breaks down? What if there is a really great sale on summer sandals at the mall, how will I tell my sister?
It has become increasingly obvious that today’s cell phone user can’t go for too long without their favorite gadget. The complete and total saturation into the consumer market of the cell phone has been one of the most astounding that has ever been witnessed. Watch the people as they drive down the street, a good 60% if not more of them have cell phones plastered to their ears. Walk through a mall or in a coffee shop you will find that most of the customers are busily talking to someone else while they are trying to conduct business with the shopkeepers and baristas. What did we ever do before we were able to contact anyone we wanted anywhere we wanted?
As much as people complain about their use in cars and while standing at the checkout in the store, the cell phone is really a wonderful device. Many people stated that their purpose in getting their first cell phone was for emergencies. While they may have been just giving a good excuse for buying the irresistible device, the reason is actually a very valid one. Not only are you connected to everyone you know at a moments notice, but you are also able to connect to emergency services in the event something happens. And not only that but there have been instances of bystanders using a cell phone to call for help for another person. That is the really great benefit of cell phones.
The technology has advanced to such a degree that a person carrying a cell phone can be located if their cell is on. This has great implications for the parents of children who are missing. If that child has a cell and it is on they should be able to be located. The technology is not fool proof and that does not mean that we can put our guard down and not protect ourselves. It only means that there are a greater number of options for locating missing people.
So the question remains, what did we do before cell phones? Well, I guess we broke down in our cars and walked to a pay phone, or we found the great sale at the mall and had to wait till we got home to tell our sister. We managed to get through life without them. But now that they’re here, who wants to?
