Cellulite is the term used to describe fat pockets which are trapped and cause dimpling. The marking is patchy and irregular and has been likened to orange peel.

It is hardly ever seen in men but about 90% of post adolescent women will develop it during their lives. The thighs, buttocks and the abdomen are the usual locations for a woman to have cellulite. Although it is often mistaken for obesity, cellulite is not actually obesity related because it can also take place in thin lean women.

There are three specific layers of fat underneath the skin layers. Cellulite tends to develop in the subcutaneous fat layers. The structure of this layer of fat is unique as its fatty parts are structured into specific chambers by strands of linked tissue around it.

The storage of fat along with the body's metabolism in the subcutaneous layer of fat is helped out by hormones. Cellulite formation is also caused by hormonal factors of estrogen and folliculine. Cellulite is for the most part found in women during their hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause and also whilst taking birth control pills.

Diet, exercise and lifestyle influence a person's fat storage as well as their genetic make up.

Most fat layers have no role in cellulite forming on a person's body and its formation is a result of complex physiological changes that occur only in the subcutaneous fat layer. Well balanced diets and regular exercise do not always reverse or prevent the formation of cellulite but an unhealthy lifetstyle will make the appearance worse due to weight gain, lack of water and poor nutrition.

Furthermore with age there is a loss in the thickness and tone of the connective tissue in the superficial fat layer and the dermis. Unfortunately noticeable, flaccid cellulite is the result.

Cellulite Treatment

There is a huge variaety of products available on the market today claiming to treat cellulite. Its hard to know what does what it claims to do and thus it is easy to make expensive mistakes and get sucked in.

Lots of products consist of topical treatments which alone are ineffective in cellulite treatment. There are also creams available which contain herbs, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. These creams help the skin to become healthier, smoother, softer and help it to repair itself easier.

Cellulite cream which have antioxidants and anti-inflammatories are more effective when treating cellulite as the flow of blood is stimulated. Cellulite affected areas are usually need extra moisture, increased blood supply and protection as they are dry and damaged. Thus the appearance of cellulite can be temporarily improved by increasing moisture to the area.

It needs to be remembered cellulite needs to be treated from the inside as well as the outside.

There are also options for removing cellulite through cosmetic surgery, usually as a last resort however as they are very expensive!
