Many American households serve pizza in the home at least once a week. American families cannot get enough of it, and with the development of gourmet pizza entering the food arena, families are beginning to gravitate towards it too. Nevertheless, what makes a gourmet pizza? What defines it in comparison to a traditional pizza? Here we take a closer look at the gourmet pizza craze.

According to the NPD Group, an organization that follows and records American consumer eating habits, Americans eat approximately 100 acres of pizza each day or 350 slices per second. As a result, it is a natural transition that Americans are making the switch from traditional pizza to gourmet. This is great news for the pizza industry for it earns $30 billion per year, and by factoring in the gourmet pizza market, the earned revenue increases further.

What Makes Gourmet Pizza Unique
The structure of a traditional pizza is generally the same. It consists of dough, sauce, and toppings. However, with a gourmet pizza, there are unusual toppings, varied ingredients, spices baked into different choices of dough, house-made cheeses used and more. The possibilities are endless. Think about a standard, four-door, family sedan you buy from a dealership. You just bought an ordinary car with no bells or whistles. Then, think about the exact car amped up, tweaked, and rewired into a professional racing car. The racing car is what gourmet pizza does for the pizza industry. It is a revved up pizza with options galore.

Types of Gourmet Pizza Available Today
Gourmet pizza is a twist on the traditional. Think about what ingredients you would like on it and voila, you have a gourmet pizza. For example, if you are a seafood lover, then why not try shrimp, house-made mozzarella, fresh basil, herb oil, chili flakes and lemon zest. Alternatively, make a pizza with Schreiner's Sicilian Sausage, roasted fennel, house-made mozzarella, and tomato sauce. Add whatever toppings you prefer. If different tastes exist in your household, then create 11-12 inch pizzas for each person. If you are not much of a chef, try ordering out from a gourmet pizza restaurant. Just be sure the restaurant has the freshest ingredients and wide array of choices for toppings. Think about adding artichokes, clams, eggs, and/or potatoes. Try various combinations into a pizza that is original as you!
