 By: Gid Anderson

One of the primary reasons why there are people buying rare sleds is because they treasure antique quality items. There are individuals (often relates to rich people) that collects old wooden sleds to bring back happy childhood memories of days spent with friends on a snow-covered hill. In fact, some collectors have already gathered large fleet of rare sleds. Jon Holcomb, a famous Flexible Flyers collector has actually built a site to display his fine fleet of at least 300 rare sleds. Jon mostly collects and displays Flexible Flyers, but he welcomes other collectors to his site and features theirs also, including sleds made by Standard Novelty Works, Buffalo Sled Co. (later known as Auto Wheel Coaster Co.), Paris Sled Company, American Acme Co. (formerly American Toy and Novelty Works) and more.

One of the best way to enjoy winter is having a crazy time with the snow by sledding. There are many different types of rare snow sleds used for reacreation and work. On a regular basis, sleds are also utilized as freight transportation on snowy places. These all have extremely different uses and there are a variety of different reasons they may be used by a variety of different people. The following are some of the more popular and well-known types of sleds that are commonly used:

- Dog sleds - These sleds are powered by dogs and used primarily on races as well as to transport large things from one place to another.

- Toboggans - One of the earliest designs of sleds that comes without runners and are available in various forms.

- Hand sleds - Hand sleds are meant to be pulled behind the person with a rope and not necessarily to be hopped on. These type is generally used for transporting items.

- Freight Sleds - Freight Sleds are quite similar to hand sleds because they are meant for transporting cargos but with a number of difference. One main difference is that these are often pulled by dogs or people, depending on how heavy the freight is and the distance of travel.

It was a clear, warm summer afternoon on Lake Chaubunagungamaug in Webster, Massachusetts. We were anchored in a quiet cove, playing a lively game of cribbage when I spotted a pair of eagles soaring high above us. It was as if they were playing a game of tag. Then suddenly one of the eagles headed straight down into the water and came back up with a big fish in its beak. He flew to a tall bushy pine tree nearby to enjoy his fresh catch.
Families today are all electronically connected. Facebook, Twitter and texting are the norm today. When I grew up such things were not available to us and many of us have “Happy Memories” of an earlier day. The younger generation today is losing its ability to create "Happy Memories" and I feel for them. Most of the younger generation have not had the chance to see the sun rise over a low hanging fog on a beautiful lake.
