Radiators Have A Long And Interesting History

Radiators have a long and interesting history in terms of their development and support of the internal combustion engine which powers most automobiles, locomotives, motorcycles and piston driven airplanes. As a testament to the genius of certain automotive engineers, the radiator truly stands out for the efficiency of its design, which first evidenced itself way back in the late 1800s.

Basically, what a radiator does is take coolant that is circulated through an engine and then reduce it in temperature so that it does not boil over and can still keep an engine cool. Most any engine that makes use of gasoline or diesel or some other fossil fuel will require the services of a radiator in order to remain cool enough to run efficiently.

This coolant -- after it has been sent through the engine -- comes back to the radiator at near-boiling temperatures. It will circulate through the core of the radiator and will be cooled down by means of air rushing through it from the forward motion of the vehicle and by air pushed through it by means of a fan placed in front of the engine and behind the radiator.

The design for the first radiator that was patented is generally accepted to have been the work of the German engineer and designer Karl Benz, who is famous for his part in the creation of the Mercedes-Benz automobile. He was the first to patent the radiator, beating two other German engineers named Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. None of the three new the other two were working on a radiator.

Karl Benz was truly a genius and was so effective at coming up with methods for improving the internal combustion engine that he is normally thought of as the creator of it, though this isn't technically true. However, he is actually the creator of the first gasoline powered automobile. Historically, the first radiator for an engine was patented by Benz back in 1879.

Over the years -- particularly up to the 1970s -- the basics of radiator design pretty much remained what they had been in 1879. They are internal cores were generally made of brass and copper, and the extreme sturdiness and ability of these two metals to dissipate heat effectively was a testament to design genius. Aluminum, starting in the 1970s, began to make a dent in the Copper and brass radiator market.

Why this occurred is mainly due to the rise of oil prices in the early 1970s. Cars back then tended to be heavier than they are today and also much less efficient at burning gasoline or other fuels. However, auto makers discovered that lighter vehicles earned less fuel, which was why aluminum -- being extremely light -- soon showed up in radiators, though most aftermarket units today are still made of copper and brass.

Today, technological improvements in copper and brass manufacture for radiators has led to automotive radiators that are nearly as light as those made of aluminum. Additionally, they tend to be far more durable and sturdy then aluminum-based radiators. Because of this, it doesn't look as if the radiator meant to cool an internal combustion engine will be going away any time soon.
