Originally a significant city of Holy Roman Empire, Frankfurt am Main in west-central Germany is now a bustling modern metropolis and important hub of trade in finance, both in Germany and Europe.

Accommodation

There is plenty of accommodation in the city for all travelers from businessmen to backpackers, although visitors are advised to book in advance from March to May and September to October because of the high number of trade shows and conventions in the city. Hostels in Frankfurt offer a great alternative for those exploring the city on a budget.

Top Sights

One of the city's most famous sites is the Gothic St Bartholomeus’s Cathedral. There has been a church on the site ever since 680, although the current building dates only as far as 1867 when it was destroyed by a fire.

Technically, it is not a cathedral as it has never been the seat of a bishop but the major role of the church is the city’s imperial history and its use for coronations has led the honorary term of ‘cathedral’ to be widely recognized as correct since the 18th century.

Another popular attraction in Frankfurt is the former home of the city's renowned writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was born in Frankfurt in 1749. The site in the Old Town has been preserved at the Goethe House and Museum, offering an insight into both his life and the city in the 18th century.

The building was actually destroyed by bombing during World War II but has been painstakingly restored to its best.

The River

The name ‘Frankfurt Am Main’ is derived from the city’s position on the edge of the Main River. In the summer, travelers can soak up the urban vibe with a stroll from their Frankfurt hostels along the riverbanks where there are a number of cafés and laidback restaurants. Even though it is in the, heart of a very busy city, the river itself is quiet and peaceful – the perfect antidote to the noise of the streets themselves.

Boat tours are also available on the river, providing beautiful views of the city and its architecture. The trips usually head towards Offenbach or the Griesheim locks, although some tours go down the Main and onto the Rhine where visitors can also see towns like Mainz, Eltville and Rudesheim.
