Eating disorders plague millions of men and women throughout the world. Many people don't seek help and eventually die from their disease. Eating disorders are diseases. They afflict the mind, tricking the individual into thinking he or she needs to take the most drastic measures to change his or her appearance. The individual then takes action, be it binge eating, starving themselves, or purging.
Eating disorders can be classified into three types - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and obesity. The first two deals with women who are extremely conscious with the way they look, hence trying to maintain a very light weight bordering on malnutrition. The last one is an uncontrollable compulsion for eating thus leading to a weight that is way above their ideal weight.
Being thin is not bad or wrong per se. Keeping your weight at the ideal level with respect to your height is actually beneficial to your health. The problem begins when a young girl who wants to be thin would resort to drastic measures such as starving herself to death in order to be thin.
