If you think that eating disorders are primarily a disease which exclusively afflict the female population, think again! Men can also be fall easy victims to this disorder. In fact, studies show that approximately 10 per cent of those affected with the disease belong to the male population.
Compulsive overeating is one of the least noticed eating disorders at present but it can also bring about serious health complications. Compulsive overeating is usually developed during the childhood years when a person's eating habits are being formed. People who never learned how to deal satisfactorily with stressful situations are observed to be more prone to acquire this malady than those who have the ability to face their problems head-on.
There are several similarities and differences between Anorexia and Bulimia. Both Anorexia and Bulimia usually start in people after a time of dieting. These individuals generally go on a diet as they are obsessed with the fact of having perfect bodies, or are afraid of becoming obese, or have problems with anxiety, stress or even depression, or being a perfectionist.
Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which the sufferer consumes food, unusually large amounts of food, on a regular basis in a brief period of time, hungry or not and continues to eat until they feel rather uncomfortable. These bouts are usually followed by feelings of guilt.
In Bulimia Nervosa, the individual binges and then purges which can be in the form of vomiting, exercising to excess, using laxatives or enemas, in order to try and get rid of the excess calories. This takes place in a cycle of bingeing and purging.
An eating disorder is a symptom that a person is having a more serious problem in his/her life and not a problem with food as most often people seem to think. The most common reason for all eating disorders is low self-esteem. It is more of a psychological situation, very often the person who suffers from it being obsessed with food and diet and also trying to maintain a shapely figure.
Anorexia nervosa is often seen as an eating disorder in which the person has a low self-esteem. They have a need to be in control of their surroundings and also their emotions.
In today's world, we may think that AIDS is the most prevalent disease. This is not so, individuals suffering from eating disorders are thrice the amount as that of individuals suffering from AIDS.
It is a common myth that only females and especially teenaged girls have eating disorders. Eating disorders more often begin during the teenage years and are especially more common in women. However, they do occur in men too and they can occur at any age.
