If your children are having problems learning to read you have to intervene as reading is very important. And if your children have problems with reading they will have problems throughout school. So you must do something so your children get ahead in reading.
Nowadays most schools let children print in block letters like the keys on a keyboard instead of teaching writing as in continuous cursive. Probably a lot of parents cannot see any benefit in teaching writing as their children spend more time on a keyboard than with a pen and notepad.
Even though the pencil looks like it is going the way of the dinosaur we parents need to know how to teach kids to write. Anyway we learnt to write many years now it is our turn to be teachers. If your kid is having problems with writing it could be as simple as a weak hand. And a few hand exercises will possible cure it.
Most kids start to learn to read at kindergarten but they are also learning lots of other things to do with communication. They are still increasing their speaking vocabulary, which is very important. As the more words a child can say the more they should understand when you read to them.

The word ‘bias’ means ‘partiality’, ‘unfairness’, ‘favoritism’. A Biased Question is a question worded in such a way that a particular answer is favored over others. Biased questions are also referred to as ‘leading questions’ as it leads or steers the respondents to a certain response. Biased questions influence people to answer in a way that does not just reflect their stance.
I was utterly amazed with the National Geographic program My Brilliant Brain. It is amazing what our brains are capable of. After watching the program about the girl chess master it seems that we have to somehow transfer the knowledge from our short-term memory to our long-term memory. In the story when the girl was very young the girl’s father kept showing her different chess moves from the grand masters. This constant repetition instilled her chess knowledge in her long-term memory. This is not an isolated case as the father used the same approach with the younger sisters and the three girls are now all grand chess masters.
Some parents debate whether learning to write is necessary as all around them they see computers and keyboards. I sometimes wonder myself as I was brought up on a notepad and pencil and all around me kids are using computers. As a school teacher I still use the blackboard and chalk, but most of the young, new teachers use the computer and power point presentations. I have tried using the computer in the classroom but it didn’t suit me, as I like to stand and walk around. I think the kids prefer the blackboard as the teacher can create the lesson as they go. But the debate still continues whether students like using a computer in the classroom or not.
Phonics are very easy to learn, they are nothing to be intimidated about. We use phonic sounds every time we speak. When teaching phonics we have to match the phonic sound we say with the written phonic sound. It is that simple. When you are learning how to teach phonics you will need a phonic chart so you can work out the phonic written sounds and how to say them.
Phonics has been around for over a hundred years so it has passed the test of time. The other approaches to teaching reading seem to come and go. The whole language approach was very popular a few years ago and all it managed to do was lower the literacy rate. But because of its colorful books and intelligent stories it will always be available.
Teaching reading is not easy and it takes time and commitment so having some fun with phonics will help. There are many ways to have fun with phonics. Ranging from games on the computer to board games and worksheets. My favorite is playing around with Montessori sandpaper letters as kids seem to love the feel of the sandpaper as they trace the words.
