Ethical Hacking and Security Penetration?

Posted by Answers Community

Every so often I like to try and break into my network using a variety of different tools (like port scanners and stuff like that).
If I do a port scan on one of my computers (they all have the same security so I only need to test one machine) from within the network (on the same LAN), will I get incorrect results?

You should be scanning your routers address, not individual PC's on your LAN network, unless your testing for certain vulnerabilities on a specific machine. Anyone trying to hack your network from an external network first needs to get past the router, then attack a machine which is vulnerable.
Scanning PC's within your network will give you individual security flaws within your network and the results will not be incorrect. Getting past the router/modem will be the big test.
