My opinion is that the Japanese system of hierarchy and well-prescribed social customs results in both a very orderly society, but one that can put a Japanese individual under a lot of pressure.

One way to learn a lot about Japanese culture and traditions is to take up one of the Japanese traditional arts. Arts include such things as the martial arts (Kendo, Aikido, Japanese Karate, Kyudo (archery)), tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and many others. You can learn a lot about Japanese culture through the study of these arts.

Depending on what city/country you are in, your choices locally may be limited. But anywhere there is someone who is Japanese, you can find someone to teach you something – even Japanese cooking. And learn a lot about Japanese culture in the process.
