Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine. The availability was greatly increased around 1775 when the Georg Friedrich Strass imitates diamonds by coating the glass with metal powder. Hence, rhinestones are called paste or diamante and a diamond simulant made from rock crystal, glass or acrylic. Rhinestones may be used as imitations of diamonds, and some manufacturers even manage to reproduce the glistening effect real diamonds have in the sun. The Modern Art movements can be said to have begun in the mid 19th century. Up until this point, the artists of the world focused their artwork on realistic depictions of the world around them. They made their living solely on commission work, government sponsorship, and exhibitions chosen by government officials. Needless to say, a change was about to come.
