Christmas Cards: A Historical Look at a Popular Tradition - Almost all of us have, at one time or another, sent or received a Christmas card. These printed holiday greetings are a mainstay of the Christmas season in the United States and many other countries around the world. But did you ever stop to wonder how this tradition got started? Who sent the first Christmas card? Christmas Wreaths: History, Tradition, and Uses - Evergreen wreaths at Christmas time are a familiar sight on doors, above fireplaces, and on homes. Wreaths have been in use for many hundreds of years, even before the birth of Christ. Many historians believe that the first wreaths date back to the Persian Empire, when royalty and members of the upper class wore diadems, or fabric headbands adorned with jewels. Other cultures would later become fascinated with this tradition, picking it up and adapting it for themselves. About 800 years before the birth of Christ, Greeks began to recognize the winners of their Olympic games by crowning them with wreaths made of laurel tree branches. Years later, when the games moved from city to city, branches from local trees were used to make these victory wreaths for the winners. Christmas Trees - The History of a Christmastime Tradition - When we talk about the history of Christmas trees, there are really several issues to address. First, there is the association of the evergreen tree with Christianity. When and where did this begin? Next, how did the evergreen tree come to be associated with the Christian holiday of Christmas? And last, how did this association manifest itself into our modern day tradition of a decorated tree at the holiday season? We will examine each of these questions one by one. Evergreen trees and Christianity: There is some debate about when and how the evergreen tree first became associated with Christianity. Some historians tell us that a monk named Boniface happened upon a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree in the woods (and possibly also performing animal and human sacrifices there). Robert Moses a New York Construction Coordinator, wanted to force Walter O'Malley into using a area in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Which later became Shea Stadium. Robert Moses wanted a city owned park as well as city built., which was not the idea of of walter O'Malley. When O'Malley was not able to find land in Brooklyn that would be suitable for a park, he started to think of other options. The Oakland Raiders have had thirteen enshrinees in the Football Hall of Fame. The Oakland Raiders first three seasons they struggled on and off the field.
