If you've never gone to a therapist before, then not knowing what to expect during that first session could be nerve-racking enough to keep you from picking up the phone to make an appointment. But, going to a therapist can help save your marriage. In an effort to calm some fears about what takes place during counseling, here is a detailed account of how the first session with any new couple is conducted.
Just like a marriage itself, marital counseling is a delicate process that works best when both parties are fully committed. If you and your spouse decide that you would like to meet with a marriage counselor, it is never going to be detrimental to the relationship. Even working towards small changes, or just simply having a forum to express your feelings, can be beneficial to any relationship.
Most of the time people believe that they should be the only ones to fix their marriage. And too often, counselors also find that couples wait until arguments and stress have gotten so difficult to deal with that they are already contemplating divorce, before they admit they need help. But, it is never too early or too late to meet with a marriage counselor.
Conflicts in a marriage affect more than just a husband and wife, especially if children are at home. No matter how hushed you try to make your arguments, or how hard you try to act like nothing is wrong, it is always surprising just how perceptive kids can be. Often the green monster known as jealousy, rears its ugly head and forces its way into your relationship. As unwelcome as it may be, jealousy is a problem that most couples deal with from time to time. But, it should not consume your relationship or become a point of stress. Most of the time, issues with jealousy can be resolved. Ask these questions.
The honeymoon stage, marital bliss and newlyweds are all words to describe you and your first year of marriage. While the words conjure up images of simplicity, passion and possibly choirs singing in the background, the truth about the first year of marriage comes as quite a shock to many "lovebirds." According to information collected by the US Census Bureau, the median age of a woman at their first divorce is 29, for men it is 30.5. The Bureau also reports that the average number of years a marriage lasts in the United States is 7.8.
Your life most likely moves at rapid pace. You have so many responsibilities and people relying on you that you barely have time to stop, let alone do anything for yourself. If you're married and have children, you and your spouse likely get little time to see one another unless you steal glances across the dinner table, or exchange a few words while one of you is helping with homework while the other mans the carpool. It seems like your life will never slow down.
