A little while back I was commiserating with a cycling friend about our respective difficulties in losing weight. We decided there was only one solution for it - a competition to see who could be the Biggest Loser. The spoils of victory would be the utter humiliation of the person who lost the least weight...

Please find following a tongue-in-cheek article which I hope makes you smile as well as gets you thinking. The advice following is not meant to be taken seriously. If you think of the opposite of what I am advising below, you will identify what really works. Here it is...

I should say from the start here that I am on very thin ice writing this article given I am male. I will save my criticism of men for another day. But I frequently hear managers, many of them women, complaining about the dynamics occurring within a largely female-based team. The problems that arise are often explained as not having enough males in the team to 'balance things out'. However, I think problems, when they arise, are due to women's strengths being misapplied...

When I started my career as a therapist in 1986, I actually believed all of my clients would want to work with me, would make the most of that time, and would be appreciative of my efforts. You can stop laughing now. I quickly was brought back to earth by teenagers who were dragged in kicking and screaming by their parents, people who were required by the courts to attend counselling but were just going through the motions, and husbands who had their wife's hand attached to their earlobe...

Whenever my two young boys read a story, invariably they want to act it out in some way. We read a story about a dragon and then they want to make a house for the dragon in our backyard. We read a story about an octopus and then they want to make an octopus. Although this is very cute in children, I think adults too have stories which they then want to play out. This is all well and good, but some people have very negative stories which they are then acting out in their lives...

My wife, Christy, recently had to see a new doctor about a few questions she had. When she came home, I asked what the doctor had to say. She said that she couldn't remember. All she could remember was that she liked him. If you work with people, the likeability factor plays a huge part in how much people want to work with or do business with you. That is, unless you impress them so much they forget what you had to say...

As a practising therapist for most of my career, I considered myself in the change business - helping people break problem patterns of behaviour. But anyone who works with people knows that not everyone sees the need for change or is motivated to take action. I am thinking of parents I knew whose adult son spent his waking hours smoking cannabis, watching TV, and who had apparently given up hopes for a better life. What could they do? How could they influence change? I believe that when change does occur, there are 5 main factors contributing...

Looking for inspiration for this article, I asked my wife, Christy, to help me identify one dumb thing I do in our relationship. I should have known better. "Only one?" she asked innocently. Apart from the occasional Saint among us, the rest of us are pretty human and do our own dumb things in relationships from time to time. In my opinion, it is OK to make mistakes as long as we learn something as we go...

In the late 6th century, Pope Gregory the Great developed a list of seven deadly sins. Here now, I will attempt to give a modern slant on these in regard to your relationship with your partner. The first of the deadly sins is pride, which raises its ugly head when you believe your opinions, perspectives or needs are more important than those of your partner. You fall into this trap, by believing your way of seeing things is the only way...

I remember when I first realised that my wife-to-be was a lot smarter than me. We were sitting in an old church waiting for a friend's wedding to start and I noticed some strange writing underneath the stained glass windows. "Would you like me to interpret the writing on those windows for you?" I offered. "Go ahead", she replied. With an attempt at humour I said, "It's Greek, for pull down to open". She replied, "Actually, it's Latin for light and life".

The Article Writer

I find it a delight to use both as an author and a publisher. It is full of nice little surprises that make the whole process of writing, reading and publishing articles a complete delight. This is one that comes out tops and beats the rest hands down.

I did a Google search and came across your site. It was exactly what I was looking for and was elated to find such a broad range of articles. As I am launching a free magazine in a small town in Florida, I wanted to be as resourceful as possible while still being able to provide some content that is interesting and well written. Your site has all the variables in the mix. Excellent Site hitting all the notes in the scale sort of speak.
