Although snowboarding became a Winter Olympic Sport in the year 1998, people have been enjoying the sport for many years now. Snowboarding was developed in the US in the 1960s and became immensely popular by the 1970s. The first snowboard is believed to have been developed by Sherman Poppen in 1965 and was nicknamed the Snurfer.
A beginner should have a board that has a beveled edge (so the edges don’t catch as easily), has a little flexibility, and is sort of hourglass-shaped like a maxi-pad, so that it is relatively easy to turn. The most important thing is that the boot always moves with your foot. Since the boot is bound to the board and you are controlling it with your feet, if your foot moves within the boot, your foot movement will not translate into board movement.
Picture yourself sliding downhill sideways. Which side is facing downhill, you’re right or left? Alternatively, imagine yourself sliding across the kitchen floor in your socks. Which foot is forward? If you answered left, you’re “regular”. If you answered right, you’re “goofy”. On a snowboard, your feet are not perfectly pointed straight toward the toe edge, they are slightly angled either to the left (regular) or to the right (goofy).
The snowboarding fever among the younger generation worldwide just shows no sign of stopping. This extreme sports activity has become a big hit among the young ones that it has achieved much the same level of popularity as the conventional snow sport of skiing.
The snowboarding mania that hit the young people notably in countries enjoying lots of snow is far from fading. With thousands of young men and women taking part in this extreme winter sport, numerous competitions are being held each year in the different parts of the world.
Frequent snowboarding can take its toll on your boards as well as other gears.
It cannot be denied that the era of snowboarding is at its peak today. With more than seven million of snowboarders all over the world and numerous competitions held each year, one cannot argue that this extreme winter sport is indeed on the upswing.
