St Lucia is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. It is known as one of the two " Breezy Islands", the other being Martinique. It is part of the Lesser Antilles and located north of the islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines, north west of Barbados and 25 nautical miles south of Martinique.

Known as the "Isle of Spice", Grenada consists of three main islands: Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique. They are located in the Eastern Caribbean at the southern end of the Windward Islands, only 100 miles north of Venezuela. Grenada is located north of Trinidad and Tobago, and south of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is located in the southeast Caribbean about 90 miles west of Barbados. The island group lie south of St Lucia and north of Grenada. The Grenadines are comprised of 32 islands and cays stretching south from St Vincent. Only 8 of the Grenadines are populated and the remaining are bird sanctuaries and very popular for both hiking and snorkelling. All are volcanic in origin and deeply embellished with inlets where the sea washes up on fine white sandy beaches. St Vincent has lush green mountains.

Cuba is an archipelago of islands located in the northern Caribbean Sea at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Its geographic coordinates are 21‘°3x N, 80‘°00x W. Cuba lies to south of the eastern United States and the Bahamas, west of the Turks and Caicos Islands and Haiti and east of Mexico. The Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south.

Turkey is well known for its Gulets. Traditional motor sailors that carry holiday makers around the Turkish coast. The boats are wide beamed and roomy compared with the conventional charter yacht. The Gulets are crewed and hands on sailing will be limited. For those wanting a little more independence there plenty of yacht charter companies in the area offering the more normal bareboat deals.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean being only slightly smaller the Sicily, the largest. It lies in the western Mediterranean off the western coast of the Italian peninsula and just to the south of the French island of Corsica, separated by the narrow Strait of Bonifacio. Mountains dominate much Sardinia's interior; the highest point is Monti del Gennargentu at 1,834 metres. The coast boasts some of the most wonderful beaches in the Mediterranean.

The Balearic Islands or Islas Baleares are to be found western Mediterranean several hundred kilometres of the eastern coast of Spain. This island group comprises Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Cabrera and Formentera. There are three airports in the islands making access extremely easy. At Palma de Mallorca on Mallorca, Ibiza on Ibiza and Mahon on Minorca. Access is also possible from the Spanish mainland via ferry from Barcelona, Denia and Valencia.

Guadeloupe is an archipelago located in the eastern Caribbean Sea at 16 degrees 15'N, 61 degrees 35'W. It comprises five islands; Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Desirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante.

The British Virgin Islands are one of the Caribbean's most popular yacht charter destinations and Tortola is home to the world's largest fleet of charter yachts. You can choose between Skippered or bareboat charter, motor or sailing vessels, monohulls or catamarans as well as crewed, luxury or mega yachts. There is something for everone in the BVI. The Saronic Gulf lies to the south of Athens, the capital of Greece. As a practical sailing area it includes the Athens or Attica coast on the mainland, the eastern coast of the Peloponnisos including the Gulfs of Idhras and Argolikos. Some of the better known Islands include Aigina, Poros, Idhra or Hydra and Spetsai.

This article looks at the harbours and anchorages on the western coast of the Peloponnisos in the Southern Ionian sea. We begin a Katakolon and proceed south through the gulfs of Messiniakos and Kolpos finishing on the island of Kithera, birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. Although like much of Greek mythology this claim is disputed by other locations. In this case by Cyprus which also lays claim to be the birthplace of the godess.
