  • Substance Abuse Treatment: A Well Rounded Approach to Recovery - Many substance abuse drug rehabs and mental health treatment programs are beginning to recognize that addressing mind, body, and spirit in their treatment programs provides clients with a well-rounded and comprehensive protocol for sobriety and recovery. Very few treatment facilities have incorporated a philosophy that incorporates all four of these principles simultaneously. However, in order to adopt a true holistic philosophy and address the client's healing in the fullest spectrum of an addict's life, the substance abuse treatment protocol must be taken a step further than what is traditionally offered by treatment facilities to include the client's environment and the environment in general. When clients are taught to heal the environment around them as part of their therapeutic recovery process while in a residential setting, they have the opportunity to practice raising their consciousness.
  • Overcoming Addiction - It's As Difficult As You Think It Is - As a person who smoked a pack of cigarettes and choked down an average of twelve beers a day for more than 15 years, I think I may know a little something about addiction. Not only addiction, but overcoming addiction, because I walked away from both practices without the aid of gum, patches, meetings, or counselors. I'm not implying that there's something wrong with getting help, I'm simply saying that for me the traditional kinds of help weren't necessary. Whatever works to help individuals overcome addiction is a good thing, no matter what form it takes.
  • Overcoming Addiction - If I Can Do It, Anyone Can Do It - If I overcame being addicted to alcohol and cigarettes, anyone can. For the better part of 15 years I engaged in both drinking and smoking enough to be considered "addicted". I'm not one to buy into such labels, but if we do become addicted to alcohol and/or cigarettes, then I was surely addicted. I drank and smoked every day for the better part of that entire 15 years. And not just having one or two drinks. I drank at least a twelve pack of beer a day, and smoked at leasta pack of cigarettes a day.
  • The End of Addiction - Over and over again I have been asked about the subject of addiction. Is it possible to 'cure' an addiction? I submit that it is. I know, I know. I am going to get beaten up mightily over a statement such as this. But let us look at a few facts. It is first vital to understand that your thoughts create your reality. This is common sense. If you can control your thoughts, you can control your personal reality. More common sense. Now, humans are capable of only so much. They can communicate. They act.
  • The Facts About Alcohol Rehab and Drug Rehab Programs - Alcohol rehab and drug rehab centers and programs require a sincere dedication on the part of the addict to make sure that they are successful in their task. Some say that if the person addicted to the substance abuse is dedicated and sincere about wanting to be rehabilitated, that is as much as 50% of the way to the road to recovery. So clearly, finding the right alcohol rehab program or drug rehabilitation center can make all the difference. If you choose the wrong program, your chances for successful treatment are greatly reduced. Depending on the type of addiction, treatments vary from center to center and from program to program.
  • Too Much Of A Good Thing - Drug and Vitamin Overdose - There is an addiction, endemic in a certain age-group in this nation. It turns seemingly normal people into "pill-poppers" who cannot stop, and require increasing numbers to satisfy their habit. Their addiction: over-the-counter medications and vitamin nutritional supplements; the people: the elderly. Many people are used to taking non-prescription medications to retain their health and deal with a number of minor complaints. However, with age, the number of health complaints - such as arthritis or cardiovascular disease - increases meaning that many turn to more and more drugs to restore their health. Crucially though, the dosage needed for most medication decreases with age and with so many people self-medicating, it is likely that an increasing number of people are taking too many medication, in too high an amount, for their health concerns.
  • The Effects Of Smoking and Drinking - For many years I was deeply involved in both the practices of drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. For the better part of 15 years I did both things to the tune of a pack of cigarettes and a twelve pack of beer a day. Many people, who are involved in these two practices for as long as I was, say that they were addicted to them.
  • Hair Follicle Drug Testing: Is It Right for You? - Hair follicle drug testing is one of the most beneficial means of detecting drug abuse in just about any setting. Whether you need to test for drugs in the workplace, in schools or even at home, hair testing can provide the level of accuracy and the reliability you need. Besides, what's the point of conducting a drug tests if you're can't be sure the results are correct? A false positive drug test can be just the thing to ruin a person's life.
  • Hair Drug Screening - How to Use Hair Drug Tests as a Teen Drug Use Deterrent - Hair drug screening is one of those things that you should really think about as a parent. No matter how well you've raised your kids, you can't eliminate the negative forces from the outside world all of the time. That's why implementing drug testing in your home could be a great way to not necessarily catch your child using drugs but rather, to discourage their use in the first place. It's all about psychology.
  • How Hair Drug Tests Work - Hair drug tests are very easy to use and a very accurate form of drug testing method. Even so, that doesn't stop people from trying to cheat these tests and tamper with the samples in order to create a false negative or positive. A word to the wise: don't even try it! Hair drug tests can't be tampered with, end of story. However, for those still unsure, let's take a look at the facts. How You Can (Supposedly) Cheat Hair Drug Tests You may see it online all the time. All you have to do is detoxify yourself and your test will come back negative. All of those pesky drugs will be flushed out of your system in a jiffy. But wait just a second.
  • Addiction - Learning To Live Again - About a year ago I walked away from alcohol and cigarettes, after engaging in both practices for more than 15 years. Was I addicted to drinking and smoking? I would have to say that I was, seeing as how I did both things everyday. I would have to say that, on average, for the last ten of the fifteen total years I drank a twelve pack of beer and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. I was obviously addicted to both practices because now that I'm done with them I feel as if I were walking around in a haze for those 10 years.
  • Coping Emotionally With Overcoming Addiction - Overcoming addiction, particularly drug addiction (like the one mentioned in the recent HBO documentary Addiction), is perhaps one of the most difficult physical challenges we as humans can surmount. Our body's dependency on a substance can lead to physical side effects from withdrawal, as our organs become used to life without addiction. The repercussions are multi-dimensional, and can be physical torture. Invariably it's will power and professional help that's needed to rectify the situation. But seldom when we think about overcoming addiction do we consider the mental and emotional impact of giving up.
  • An Addiction Case Study: Treating Drug Addiction - John, 28, was a drug addict, with a habit that was costing him more than just the thousands he'd spent. His liver was dying, his heart weakening, yet regardless of how hard he tried he just couldn't get out of his rut. And it wasn't just a physical thing - he was emotionally dependent on substances to make it through the day. With will power he had tried and failed. John recognized he had a problem. John knew he had to get out there and do something about it before it killed him.

  • Are You A Drug Addict? - I realize that for many of you this may seem like a silly question, but as a person who is now completely sober, I think it's an interesting question to ask. If you would have asked me five years ago if I was a drug addict, I would have told you NO. But now, looking back at the situation, I realize that I was. I drank alcohol, quite a bit, and smoked cigarettes and wouldn't have considered myself a drug addict? Five years ago, absolutely not. But when you truly think about this, I was.
