  • Take 12 Strokes off Your Golf Game by Overcoming Cathexis with Kenosis - What? - Every summer for the past five or six years I have reread Scott Peck's quirky book about psychiatry and golf, Golf and the Spirit. Peck is probably better known for his best selling books about his experiences and insights as a psychiatrist, such as, A Road Less Travelled. In Golf and the Spirit, Peck combines his love for golf and what golf has taught him about the human condition and relates that to his years as a psychiatrist, and what studying the human condition that has taught him about golf. If that sounds a bit convoluted, well, paradox is one of the recurring themes in the book.
  • Need a Change? How to Know for Sure! - You wake up on the wrong side of the bed. You snap at your friends and family. Stress fills your days and when your day is over, and you're exhausted, you can't sleep. Nothing feels quite right. Your zest for life diminishes, and your desire to DO disappears. You know you're not depressed but emotionally you're not feeling your best. Your perpetual bad day has you thinking a change is in order. A change of pace --- A change of scenery --- A change of position --- A change of something. But even though you know a change is needed, figuring out what needs changing is a little harder to pinpoint. With so many demands on your energy and time you feel as though you can't even begin to figure out what should stay and what should go.
  • Win their hearts, Not their Minds - Hey guys, Have you ever heard someone say that women are really emotional? Well, it's true. And actually, everyone is very emotional... whether we like to believe so or not. We make emotional decisions and then justify our behavior with logic. Let me share something with you that happens nearly every time I'm out with my girlfriend... Whenever I go out with my girlfriend, guys always try to come up and hit on her. It'll go really badly for them and at some point my girlfriend will tell them that I can help them get better success with women because I teach men how to meet and date women.
  • Thoughts on Playing Your Age - There is a saying in golf - I hope I live long enough to play my age. I've known a few golfers who can attest to this claim. I was reminded of this the other day while reading an obituary about a local golfer who died at the age of 95. He had been able to play his age up to four years ago, at age 91. I am usually happy with a round of 91 and I am much younger than 91.
  • We All Feel Better After A Spring Clean! - We all feel better after a spring clean. To be able to enjoy the space that has for so long cluttered the corners, restores a level of energy to ones spirit. As a hypnotherapist, some of the hypnotherapy work I enjoy most is empowering others to clear negative emotions from their past. These negative emotions are caused by past events which still cause unwanted feelings.
  • The Psychological Reality of Positive Thought and Complex Thought - A whole new school of psychiatry has grown up around the development of positive thinking. The key is intercepting negative thoughts. Surprisingly, no matter how positive we think we are, many of us have internal, mostly negative chatter that ties up thecerebral circuits all day long. Much of this chatter is actually pretty idiotic if you stop and listen to it.
  • Weight Loss Challenge: Live in Your Strengths - Has anyone noticed how easy it is to live in our (perceived) limitations and even more dangerously, to let ourselves be defined by them? Last week, when I sent out my newsletter, I got 6 emails almost immediately thanking me for the information and letting me know how much my newsletter is appreciated (ahhh . . . the power of the internet). I also got 1 email asking to be taken off my mailing list :(.
  • Stress Eating: Under Stress, We Say Yes! - Last weekend, I went to a coaching conference in Washington D.C. While I was there, I had very little hunger. As a result, I didn't eat very much the entire weekend. As I thought back on the weekend, I wondered why I had eaten so little. I had few urges to eat and rarely even thought about food. I considered the fact that I was very busy having a lot of FUN. I was with a wonderful group of coaches, learning and socializing together all weekend long. On Saturday, we went to see the cherry blossoms in the city. Saturday night was purely social - I even got talked into doing karaoke. Yes, me -- "Stop in The Name of Love" may never sound the same again!
  • I Have Binge Eating Disorder... Now What? - Are you sick and tired of wondering if your eating habits are normal? What about pondering over and over again why you feel like you aren't fully capable of having the potential to take control of your life? Are you the type of person that finds comfort in food?
  • Are You a Binge Eater? - Ever wonder if you have a serious problem with binge eating? In a recent issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter, I read a feature article about the treatment of bulimia and binge eating. Bulimia is defined as 2 or more episodes of binge eating (consuming a large amount of food in 2 hours or less) at least twice a week for 3 months. These episodes may be followed by vomiting or purging (with laxatives or diuretics) and may alternate with fasting and compulsive exercising. People who suffer from bulimia often view this behavior as a shameful secret. Binge Eating Disorder (binging that is not followed by vomiting, fasting or exercise) has gotten more attention recently since it is being considered for inclusion as a psychiatric diagnosis.
  • Are You Living The Successful Life You Want Or Something Else? - Have you wondered why you continue with life as usual, even though you are not experiencing enough happiness, and you know you want things to be different?
  • Put an End to Emotional Terrorism in Your Relationships - First let me explain what I mean by "emotional terrorism." When you have a relationship, at home or at work, with a person who's constantly humiliating you, harassing you, pressuring on you, taking pleasure in your pain, saying negative things about you or making you feel worthless, then you are caught in a situation of emotional terrorism.
  • Anger And Rejections - Rejections are normal and we all are told no on many occasions. Some persons have difficulty handling rejections and may react hastily to the other person involved. If you walk in a bank and apply for a loan and are rejected you might stomp out the door shouting obscene talk to the lenders. This is not an appropriate way to handle the situation. This in fact can get you in trouble and it is obvious that rejections are triggers to your emotions that enforce your anger. Now that you see this is a trigger you will need to learn how to cope with your anger and emotions. We can start with the technique to work through your anger by reducing your stress. If you are a spontaneous person then you will need to learn how to cut back on stressors.
  • How Happy Are You? - Our lives have gotten busier, the cost of living has increased and there's the daily stress of living during wartime.
  • Use Your Wonderful Ability To Model And Integrate Success Traits Into Your Life - What is one of the most complex things you have learned in life that you actually did very easily? The language of your family. You grew up immersed in it, as everyone around you was speaking it; you automatically learned it by copying them. The fact that your specific language characteristics will vary depending upon the region of the country you were in is clear evidence that you learned from those you were around.
  • Miscarriage - Dealing With the Emotional Impact - Miscarriage is the term given to the loss of a baby before it reaches full term. Often, people regard this as bad luck, particularly if it happens in the early weeks of pregnancy. It is difficult for many to fully comprehend the power of a woman's grief upon this loss as few can understand that the bonding process between mother and child began when she became pregnant. For some reason, society understands the loss of a baby when stillborn but not from miscarriage. The grief associated with the latter appears to be seen as a lesser grief.
  • Life Changing Tips For Boomers: Rewire Your Brain To Control Your Emotions, and Make Positive Life Choices - Do You Seem to Get Caught Up in the Same Old Reactions? Have you ever blown up at your spouse only to realize-after the smoke cleared-that you might have over-reacted just a tad?
  • Acupressure's Sweet Spot - How To Get A Rush Without The Sugar - Are you a sugar user? More and more people are resorting to high sugar drinks and snacks for a quick jolt of energy. But the trouble with using sugar for an energy boost, is that it sets up a roller-coaster effect that can soon become addictive and lead to health problems down the line. Recent research has revealed an acupressure point that boosts energy and alertness naturally and with no come down. The Highs and Lows of using Sugar for Energy Soon after a sugar fix you start buzzing with energy, but it's a short lived boost that soon swings sharply the other way with an energy slump.
  • Emotional Freedom Techniques and Answers From Acupunture - Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a healing tool based on the theory that our emotions and physical symptoms are linked to the underlying energy system of the body. That energy system is the acupuncture meridian system known to the Chinese for thousands of years. EFT was developed by Stanford Engineer Gary Craig, who discovered the basic theory in 1991 and continues to this day to develop and improve on EFT applications. The underpinning theory of EFT is simple, yet sheds a whole new light on our emotional experiences and how we interpret them. Gary Craig's EFT discovery statement asserts that: "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system." He believes that "our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases." How Does EFT Work?
  • Learn to Love and Accept Yourself - How many people can actually say that they love and accept themselves just as they are? Learning to love yourself is quite possibly one of the hardest things to accomplish in your life. And that is when there is nothing wrong with you. Imagine having an eating disorder.
