As a person who smoked a pack of cigarettes and choked down an average of twelve beers a day for more than 15 years, I think I may know a little something about addiction. Not only addiction, but overcoming addiction, because I walked away from both practices without the aid of gum, patches, meetings, or counselors.

If I overcame being addicted to alcohol and cigarettes, anyone can. For the better part of 15 years I engaged in both drinking and smoking enough to be considered "addicted".

For many years I was deeply involved in both the practices of drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. For the better part of 15 years I did both things to the tune of a pack of cigarettes and a twelve pack of beer a day. Many people, who are involved in these two practices for as long as I was, say that they were addicted to them.

About a year ago I walked away from alcohol and cigarettes, after engaging in both practices for more than 15 years. Was I addicted to drinking and smoking? I would have to say that I was, seeing as how I did both things everyday. I would have to say that, on average, for the last ten of the fifteen total years I drank a twelve pack of beer and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.

I realize that for many of you this may seem like a silly question, but as a person who is now completely sober, I think it's an interesting question to ask. If you would have asked me five years ago if I was a drug addict, I would have told you NO.

I'm a person who walked away from both drinking and smoking, after engaging in both activities for more than 15 years, and I've always been perplexed at how so called "addictions" seem to fit together. Smoking cigarettes and drinking go together like Peas and carrots.

The dictionary describes addiction as: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma. Okay, now we know exactly what an addiction is. And I think that we would all agree that people think of being addicted to both alcohol and cigarettes.
