  • Wellness and Making Good Choices - What do you think of when someone says the word wellness? What does it mean to you? Out of curiosity, I looked up "definition of wellness" on the web and a bunch of different results came up! Many of them referred to being physically, medically or mentally well. My favorite definition of wellness comes from the National Wellness Association of Singapore - "wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence". An active process.... To me, wellness represents the integration of physical, mental/emotional and spiritual fitness. A healthy mind and a healthy body so to speak. Throughout our lives, all these components change constantly because of new experiences and learning along with the body changes...especially as we enter middle age and beyond.

Sometimes there are a number of those annoying advertisements all in a row, so it's, delete, delete, delete. And what about those annoying little "pop-ups" when you go to some web sites? Delete, delete, delete! The reason we delete the things on our computers is because we don't want them! They are of no value to us. They are just a waste of time.
  • Are You Eating To Stifle Your Anger? - Abigail had always been slim and attractive and a moderate, sensible eater. In the past few months, however, she has taken to eating two boxes of cookies a day, and often finishing off with a pint or two of ice cream at night. She is putting on pounds in an uncontrollable fashion but can't understand why she is doing this to herself - until, that is, she realizes the hidden connection between her compulsive overeating and buried anger that she is trying to suppress. I will tell you more about her in a moment, but let me let you in on a secret about this connection. If you're using food to stifle your feelings of anger, you probably don't know it. That's because the type of anger that creates compulsive overeating is a suppressed emotion.

  • Type D Personality? - We have all heard of Type A personality types, but have you heard about Type D, or distress, personality? There was an observation made by, Johan Denollet, a Belgian psychologist, of cardiac patients a while back. Denollet noticed that some patients with extensive cardiac problems were optimistic and went through rehabilitation enthusiastically, while others, who had only mild problems were more pessimistic and did not follow rehabilitation activities well. Denollet was interested in the why of this. Out of his work came a 14 question survey designed to determine whether a person has something he termed "distress" personality.
  • How to Have Joy Though Unhappy - I once heard a comedian jest about the idiomatic misuse of words by English speaking people. With tongue in cheek, he spent about fifteen minutes offering some very witty examples. For instance, he pointed out that we call goods transported on the sea CARgo, but those same goods transported on land are called a SHIPment.
  • Are You Fit... Emotionally? - This week, I was surfing the web for ideas for fitness articles and something really caught my attention. It was an article on emotional fitness by Dr.Mathew Anderson called "Fat and Emotional Fitness". What is emotional fitness? Well, it's really about our ability to recognize what each of our emotions are telling us, as well as being comfortable with all of our emotions and those of others. Dr. Anderson's premise is that emotional fitness is an important factor in weight control because so many of us eat, not only when we are hungry, but also when we do not recognize our emotions for what they are. The following "checklist" is excerpted from "Fat and Emotional Fitness": An Emotionally Fit Person... 1. Knows how she/he feels at any given moment and can give that feeling a name.

By studying brain-wave readings throughout the day, they found 2 distinct kinds of rhythms.
  • Thoughts About Grief - Some Thoughts About Grief: Grieving: Kübler-Ross said that the grieving process involves experiencing all five stages of grief, although not always in this order. Although not everyone progresses through these stages in the same order and not everyone experiences each stage, the feelings and emotions identified seem to be universal. Shock and Denial: The first reaction to loss is often the inability to feel anything. This may include feeling numb, weak, overwhelmed, anxious, not yourself, or withdrawn. Anger: Blaming yourself or others for the loss.

  • Are you receiving the Happiness you should? - How do you feel about what is around you in life? What do you expect people, situations and things to provide to you? So often we make statements like; 'I don't get any pleasure from. . . ', or 'it/they no longer gives me what I want', or 'it doesn't satisfy me.' What are we really saying with this kind of statement and what are we telling ourselves when we say them? This kind of statement reflects a perception that our satisfaction and pleasure is or is not provided by things outside of ourselves. This is not the case, no matter how much you want it to be. It is however, a very common perception of life - that our emotional happiness is subject to people, places and things.
