Expert Author: Ned Wicker | Category: Addictions

Everybody knew that “Jerry” needed to get some help with his drinking. His routine of having a couple of drinks with the boys after work began to include several after dinner drinks as well. Jerry had missed meetings with his daughter’s teacher, and had not attended a soccer game or dance recital in months.

Most support groups for alcohol and other drug addictions are 12-Step Groups. Twelve-Step Groups are a worldwide fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism and other drug addictions.
Substance abuse is the overindulgence in and dependence of a drug or other chemical leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare of others. Substance abuse may be a contributing factor for between one-third and two-thirds of maltreated children in the child welfare system.
Alcoholics are sick both in mind and in body...and successful alcohol treatment must heal them on both fronts. As insane as alcoholics can be when in the grips of the disease of alcoholism, the alcoholic may really believe they can still have that first drink the next morning, hoping to yield a different result, maybe they believe they can stop after the first drink or two, maybe they believe they can continue drinking "normally" and not to excess that eventually leads to a blackout.
From what I’ve been able to ascertain the term “Children of Alcoholics” was first coined in 1945, by a psychiatrist who was treating a large number of people suffering from alcoholism. Apparently He began to notice a recurring pattern of family history of alcoholism in one or both parents of the patients.
Many Alcohol and Drug Recovery Programs and Support Groups predicate their treatment upon the erroneous theory that all addiction is a disease. They claim that the disease of addiction is incurable, and most of these programs spend a good deal of time focusing on convincing the addict - how powerless they are to overcome this incurable ailment.
Many people joke about quitting an addiction, my father used to say, “Quitting drinking and smoking is easy, I do it every day just before bed.” For about 80 per cent of smokers and those with other addictions, the first attempt to quit is not the last. More often than not, it can be defined as a process in which, you take two steps forwards and one step back.
Realizing that you have an addiction can be one of the scariest experiences in a person’s life. Not only will it seem like you’re whole world is falling apart right before your eyes, but looking forward to a future of sobriety seems next to impossible in that moment of time. Luckily, there are a number of top-notch rehab facilities in the United States, just waiting to help you overcome your addiction.
