Everyone knows that we need to burn more calories than we eat to lose weight. But what are calories? Why is it we can lose weight by burning calories? How are calories being burnt?

If you look at any label for any type of food or beverage, you will find out just how many calories or in the product. Coffee is no different, but to, you apparentlystart out with zero calories, zero carbohydrates and zero nutritional value.

It may seem like a "contradiction" to suggest that eating "more often" is the answer to getting slimmer, but in reality the idea of eating more often is the only way to speed up weight loss.

Everybody understands what a calorie is -- and everybody "knows" that the best way to lose weight is to begin eating fewer calories per day. Right?

Did you know that the difference between weight gain and weight loss can be as little as 100 calories per day?

The factor we are going to consider here is if cardio burns a significant amount of calories, hence lose weight / burn fat, while performing the aerobic activity. Well, obviously, any activity you perform, whether it's cardio, lifting, mowing the lawn, etc., requires the body to burn calories for fuel and energy.

Think of your body as a giant scale. That scale is a perfect analogy for gaining and losing weight. Think of putting "calories you burn" on one side and "calories you eat" on the other side.

To maintain your current weight, the scale needs to be balanced. If you eat more calories than your body needs, you tip the scale. These extra calories are stored as fat -- on your hips, butt, stomach, chest, face, etc., etc. etc. (feel free to add your personal trouble spot here).

Surprisingly, we can have a diet primarily using negative calories. The prevailing opinion is that our body uses more calories to digest some aliments than the calories we know those aliments contain themselves by analyzing the combination of nutritional components of the specific aliments. If we burn more calories than we consume, then we will lose weight.

In order to loose weight you must first understand the thing that makes you gain weight. Calories are found in every food and we cannot live without it, but what is a calorie? A calorie is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a liter of water one degree. Calories can’t be all bad because they are in everything we eat.

According to the American Dietetic Association, the difference between weight loss and weight gain can be as little as 100 calories a day. Most Americans suffer from 'weight creep' - those nagging pounds that creep on over the years - at an average of about 2 pounds per year. That's 20 pounds in ten years. 40 pounds in 20. Can you afford to weigh 40 pounds more than you do now in twenty years?

Every hypocaloric diet decreases the metabolism. Therefore less calories are burnt every day. The "Burn the Fat and Feed the Muscle" program is exactly the opposite.

All foods contain calories but some foods need more calories to digest than they contain.

Being on a weight loss plan always seems to be coupled with being hungry and snacking in between meals. Though it can be difficult to keep your hands from the small potato chip bag by your computer, you need to stay in control and ask yourself whether you are legitimately hungry. When you are legitimately hungry, choose a low calorie snack, like raisins or pretzels instead.

You've probably heard of the Negative Calorie Diet, sometimes referred to as the Catabolic Diet. On the surface, it sounds like a dieters dream. The more you eat, the more weight you lose. Can this be real?

There's no escape from science. To gain weight, calories in must be greater than calories burned. To lose weight, calories in must be less than calories burned.

You know you are going to have to reduce your calorie intake to lose weight, but how many calories are you going to have to eliminate. If you eliminate too many calories, your body is going to think it is being starved and it is not going to want to give up any of its weight. So the key is coming up with a number that will allow you to lose, but still allow the body to be nourished properly.

If you have tried to lose weight you have worried and wondered about calories. You might have heard that you have to count calories to lose weight. Then someone else said "calories don't count." So which is it? What are calories anyway, and what do they mean to you?
