It would have been unthinkable just a decade ago, but now it is common place in the UK to hear of zero per cent credit cards. Brought about by fierce competition, both from UK and American lenders, and also by historically low interest rates, zero per cent credit cards have become extremely popular. Today, it is almost impossible to find a lender that does not offer some form of zero percent credit card.

There has been a rapid growth in the availability of zero per cent rates in the credit card industry. These have been caused by the combination of very low national interest rates, and the injection of fierce competition from American lenders such as Capital One. The UK credit card industry is now recognised as one of the most sophisticated and competitive credit card markets in the world.

Despite new rules to protect the UK's 11 million store card holders, analysis from money website, Fool.co.uk reveals that stores are still ripping off customers, with some charging almost 50 per cent more interest on their store cards than credit cards. The Competition Commission brought in new regulations, in May 2007 to govern the administration, of store cards that charge annual percentage rates (APRs) of 25 per cent or more.

Despite several new and stylish features offered by credit card providers to tempt consumers, the most popular is still, zero per cent interest on balance transfers, according to comparison website, Fairinvestment.co.uk. Even though it is one of the most common features to be offered, 21 per cent of participants, listed zero per cent interest on balance transfers as the most important feature to come with a credit card.

THE skills shortage is hitting business hard, with turnover on the rise, more companies recruiting staff from overseas and workers picking up the biggest salary increases in Western Australia and Queensland, both riding high on the mining boom.

I can say in the end that student credit cards can be useful at times, but if they are not used responsibly they can do more harm than good.
