  • Detoxing For Addictions - Finding reliable drug detox instructions can be hard. When self-drug detoxification is attempted, there are a few things to keep in mind. Always seek professional help. Remember no advice is better than what your doctor can give you on drug problems. There are many methods or remedies used for drug detoxification. Detox diets, detox drinks, detox footbaths, and detox patches, to name a few.
  • What is an Addiction(R) - We are addicted to a substance or an activity when we repeatedly crave for it and would go to great lengths (often even detrimental to our well being) to obtain or experience it. Addictions can be to substances such as alcohol and drugs or even to activities such as gambling and sex. When the consequences for indulging in an activity are significant and the substantial price paid for continuing it is not worth the reward, that activity is termed as an addiction. The range of negative addictions is wide - for some, the consequences are very minor, while for others the consequences can even be life threatening. It may astonish you to know that addictions can also be positive in nature.
  • Reasons to Quit Smoking - Reduced risk of cancer Smoking causes cancer. We've all heard that. Everyone knows that lung cancer is one of the most devastating side effects of smoking. However, what is less known is that it puts smokers at risk of many other types of cancers as well, for example, mouth cancer, cancer of the larynx (voice box), bladder, pancreas and cervix among several others. Increased risk of lung disease Smoking dramatically raises the risk of lung disease such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These diseases are also known as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). They are progressive in nature and can eventually be life threatening. Heart disease The likelihood of smokers dying from heart attacks is twice that of non-smokers.
  • Physical Effects of Withdrawal From Tobacco - The most commonly felt effects of physical withdrawal from tobacco smoking are feelings of anger, depression, anxiety and restlessness. A chain smoker's body experiences sharply rising and falling levels of nicotine on a daily basis. In the withdrawal stage, these cycles are coming to an end. Over years, the nicotine literally takes control of about 200 neurochemicals in the brain. The brain is slowly regaining control of these. This causes the intense emotional effects mentioned above. Within the first 72 hours of withdrawal, if a user abstains totally from nicotine, they will begin to feel the gradual effects of recovery. The brain is now getting used to being lavished with nicotine-free oxygen. During the early stages of withdrawal, time seems to drag endlessly. The first few weeks are interminable.
  • Hydrocodone Addiction - Do you feel anxious about getting your prescription filled before it runs out? Do you need to take more pills than before to achieve the effect you desire? Do you get your prescriptions from many doctors? Perhaps you are, like many others, a sufferer of a drug addiction. One of the most common addictions in the American society today is a relatively unheard of drug called hydrocodone. So, why haven't you heard of it before? Because, pure hydrocodone is seldom sold on its own. Why is hydrocodone addiction so common? Evidence shows that hydrocodone addiction is increasing amongst habitual users in the United States. Perhaps one of the most important factors causing this alarming rise is the fact that hydrocodone is consumed with drugs whose use and distribution is not as severely restricted.
  • Hydrocodone Addiction - A Rising Crisis - Commonly prescribed for its effectiveness as an analgesic or pain reliever, addiction to hydrocodone is today being viewed as a mounting crisis. While addiction to illicit drugs, like cocaine, marijuana and heroin that claim national headlines ever so often, is widely talked about, we scarcely know about hydrocodone abuse and addiction. For instance, did you know that hydrocodone is perhaps the most widely abused prescription drug in the United States of America? Or, that nationwide its use has quadrupled over the last decade? Sales and production of hydrocodone have been rising significantly in the past few years.
  • Heroin Addiction - The Basics - Heroin is a highly addictive, illegal drug. It among the most abused and fastest acting of the opiates (opiates, also called narcotics, are a family of drugs which are used in the medical profession to relieve pain, but are also highly abused due to this very property). It induces a feeling of intense ecstasy and brings on this effect with rapidity, making it the drug of choice among recreational users seeking a quick 'rush'. It is more often than not injected. Alternatively, it can also be sniffed, snorted or smoked. Direct short and long term effects of heroin use Addiction itself is one of the most devastating side effects of heroin. It is especially addictive because it finds its way into the brain extremely rapidly.
  • Effects of Cocaine - Cocaine has enormously devastating side effects which can eventually be fatal. It acts extremely rapidly and its short term side effects can even be experienced by a person who has used it just once. Its long term side effects gradually show up after repeated use, and their intensity depends upon the duration and quantity of use.
  • Coping With An Addiction - It is most important to stay motivated during the process of recovery. It helps to make a list of benefits, or advantages of quitting the addictive behavior. These should be benefits that are very valuable to you - valuable enough to turn your back on the addiction. Setbacks will occur and should be viewed as opportunities to learn.
