Winter is well on it's way to southern Africa in June, so Claire and I decided to visit the warmer, rain free Waterberg region north of Tshwane (new name for Pretoria) and call on two relatively little known neighbouring private game reserves of Marakele and Welgevonden, 33000 and 35000 hectares in size respectively and offering the Big 5 experience. The South African city of Cape Town was founded 350 years ago, making it the oldest city in the country. It was once just a place where Portuguese ships put in for food and fresh water on their way to and from the Far East. When the Dutch took over the lucrative spice trade, they established a base on the Cape Peninsula but had no intention of starting a colony. Then someone noticed that the land around the Cape was prime agricultural real estate and Dutch farmers came to stake out new lives. They were soon followed by French Huguenots and others and the Cape Colony was firmly established.
