  • How I Raised the Money for My Invention – A Selective Asparagus Harvesting Machine - I’ve raised money for this machine twice, once back in about 1974 and then again over the last four years or so. Let’s begin back in the early 70s, when I first started the project. I was in my early 20’s and bored one day, and I asked my father if he could think of something that needed inventing. He told me “invent an asparagus harvester”. He was a farmer and an asparagus grower. I had some interesting ideas about how one could go about building a selective asparagus harvester, and went to my friends and family begging for money. I was able to raise several thousand dollars in seed money.

  • Agriculture Scholarships for Hispanics - The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) wants to see more Hispanic students coming to work for them. With a degree in agriculture, the USDA hopes underrepresented communities will have a chance to find higher paying jobs. The Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program (HSINP), which promotes the continued growth of Hispanic enrollment in Higher Education, has been working with the USDA with this program. Partnering with colleges and universities across the country, the HSINP is hoping to put emphasis on providing more fellowships, scholarships and internship opportunities for Hispanic students so that future leaders can be made and inspired.
  • French Presidential Election: Nicolas Sarkozy's Position on European Matters - The French presidential election drew a lot of ink this year not only in France but also abroad. • The Truth About Hydroponics - Hydroponics is one of those subjects that few know much if anything about, is rife with misinformation and a minefield of useless products. Water temperature - Your nutrient solution should feel COLD at 21oC NOT WARM. 21 degrees centigrade is the ideal temperature, it's warm enough to stimulate good growth while cold enough to be able to carry the maximum amount of oxygen (O2) for our purposes. As the water rises above this temperature the water can carry less and less oxygen.
  • From Verbalism and Vocalism to Vandalism: Graduation of Anti-Agribiotech Activism in India - A few years ago activists, allegedly belonging to the Karnataka Rytha Sangha, the State farmers' organization, burned Mahyco's trial Bt cotton fields in Karnataka, India. • What Is Biotechnology - The UN Convention on Biological Diversity states, "Biotechnology is any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use". The OECD (the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development) defines biotechnology as "...the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents". Thus, "Biotechnology" basically means using biology as the basis for a technology that is applied to research and product development in areas such as agriculture, food science, and medicine. The Academic Standards for Science and Technology defines Biotechnology as the ways that humans apply biological concepts to produce products and provide services.
  • Moving Out of the City - Australia's largest metropolitan cities are exciting places to live and work, but they are becoming increasingly expensive. Although overall, Australia's housing market is stable and quite affordable, home prices in Melbourne average $335,000.
