  • Hot Tips for Managing Addiction Relapse - Many people joke about quitting an addiction, my father used to say, “Quitting drinking and smoking is easy, I do it every day just before bed.” For about 80% of smokers and those with other addictions, the first attempt to quit is not the last. More often than not, it can be defined as a process in which, you take two steps forwards and one step back. Since Relapse is a common process on the road to a non addictive identity, it is important to understand and deal with relapse sensibly and realistically. This is where dealing with an addiction from a life skills approach varies drastically from the disease treatment method.
  • Alcoholic Recovery Made Simple - Many Alcohol and Drug Recovery Programs and Support Groups predicate their treatment upon the erroneous theory that all addiction is a disease. They claim that the disease of addiction is incurable, and most of these programs spend a good deal of time focusing on convincing the addict - how powerless they are to overcome this incurable ailment. Studies have shown that lifetime recovery for addiction averages about five to six percent of all the people attempting to maintain a normal sober lifestyle, when utilizing a traditional twelve step program such Alcoholics Anonymous. Studies have also shown that basic life skills counseling for treating alcoholism, has a lifetime recovery rate of between six percent and ten percent. Personally, I’m a fan of the second method. Why?
  • Substance Abuse and the Child Welfare System - Substance abuse is the overindulgence in and dependence of a drug or other chemical leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare of others. Substance abuse may lead to addiction or substance dependence. Substance abuse may be a contributing factor for between one-third and two-thirds of maltreated children in the child welfare system. Substance abuse is not something that only happens to people of a certain income level or people who live in certain neighborhoods. Problem parents enable teens to abuse prescription drugs, marijuana, alcohol, with prescription drugs and marijuana availability up sharply. Some teens say prescription drugs are easier to buy than beer.
  • Types of Alcohol Support Groups - Most support groups for alcohol and other drug addictions are 12-Step Groups. Twelve-Step Groups are a worldwide fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism and other drug addictions. These groups typically meet weekly in a local church or community building. Recovery is not something one is able to do their own, so people often seek the support of others such as relapse prevention treatment and drug support groups like (Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous).
  • Achieving an Alcoholic Recovery - Alcoholics are sick both in mind and in body...and successful alcohol treatment must heal them on both fronts. As insane as alcoholics can be when in the grips of the disease of alcoholism, the alcoholic may really believe they can still have that first drink the next morning, hoping to yield a different result, maybe they believe they can stop after the first drink or two, maybe they believe they can continue drinking "normally" and not to excess that eventually leads to a blackout. Denial is a major obstacle to alcoholic recovery.
  • Adult Children of Alcoholics or Passing the Buck? - From what I’ve been able to ascertain the term “Children of Alcoholics” was first coined in 1945, by a psychiatrist who was treating a large number of people suffering from alcoholism. Apparently He began to notice a recurring pattern of family history of alcoholism in one or both parents of the patients. In the 1970’s the term “Adult Children of Alcoholic’s“ was born and quickly became the buzz in the media and developed into a social movement that swept the country.
  • A New View of a 12-Step Process - I recently was thinking about the 12 Steps as they have been shared with me by thousands of clients over the years. I've not been involved in addiction myself, but have worked with so many clients over my career as a therapist and a coach that I feel very familiar with the 12-step thinking.
  • The War on College Alcohol Abuse - What causes college students to abuse alcohol? The answers are probably many, but the simplest answer is this: Because they can. Abusing Alcohol is Easy When there are so few immediate consequences for excessive drinking, when repeat offenders are not disciplined, when parents are not notified about their children's drinking activities, when students get mixed messages from the college administration about alcohol, when students have seen their parents drinking alcohol in an irresponsible manner, when students are not informed about the long-tern negative consequences of alcohol abuse, when there are few alcohol-free social and recreational activities that are attractive to students, when minors or intoxicated students are served alcoholic beverages by the local drinking establishments, and when the drinking activities in the sororities and fraternities are not monitored---drinking and excessive drinking become so very easy. What Draws Students to Abuse Alcohol?
  • Help For The Alcoholic! - Question: If an alcoholic is unwilling to get help, what can you do about it? Alcoholics don't respond very well to advice, suggestions, or threats. One would imagine that under these circumstances an alcoholic is doomed to oblivion. You must realize the alcoholic is desperate to get more and more alcohol, and he or she may lie, cheat and steal in order to do so. Very simply, an alcoholic is a person whose life is controlled by alcohol. They are sick. Question: If the alcoholic is sick why doesn't he or she just go to the hospital? Because in the early stages of alcoholism, the alcoholic does not appear sick, in pain, or visibly abnormal.
  • Living with an Alcoholic - One of the commonest questions anyone working in the addiction field is asked is "How can I stop my wife/husband/partner from drinking so much?" Unfortunately the short answer to that is - you can't. They will stop when it suits them, whether that is because they hurt so much or because circumstances change. That is painful to hear, but nevertheless it is true.
  • The 12 Step Program Guide Provides Honest Help - Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization well-known for helping people with addiction problems. The 12 step program is the operational basis for the organizations program. Countless people attribute their success to the program.

  • Getting Help From the Alcoholic Anonymous Group - There are many reasons and many different kinds of people that join the alcoholic anonymous groups in their area. There are some that only go to meeting because they were told to and there are many that go to all the meeting because they want to. No matter what the reason on why you are going to the alcoholic anonymous meeting in your area, you are going to end up with something good out of it.
  • The Alcoholic Anonymous Groups - The alcoholic anonymous groups are out there to help people that realize that they have a problem with the drinking that they are doing. If you find that you are in need of a little help with the drinking you are going to want to say to yourself that you need help and then contact one of the alcoholic anonymous groups in your area.
  • Is This The Real Secret To Losing Weight? - Does maintaining a diet with no carbohydrates really help decrease weight? Since the early 1970s, several weight loss plans have supported avoiding or reducing carbohydrates, referred to as "carbs", from our diets in varying quantities. Although these carb-conscious diets are embraced by some, they continue to raise questions for many. For example, it has been debated whether it is safe to limit carbohydrate intake, and whether this can be done in a healthy, sustainable way. Some carbohydrates are better or healthier than others.
  • Revealed: Alcohol Consumption Slows Your Weight Loss - Alcohol, when consumed into the human body, is converted to carbohydrates-and, just like everything else we eat and drink, should be consumed in moderation. Too much or too little of anything is by and large a bad idea. A regular 12 fluid ounce beer has about 13g of carbs in it, while a light beer of the same portion provides you with about 4.5g of carbs. Contrary to what many people think, alcohols such as gin, rum, vodka, and whisky have hardly any carbs at all. Now, seeing as how carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of fuel, this should make drinking alcohol good, right? Wrong.
  • What is Carbohydrate Net Anyway? - Net carbs are the carbohydrates that can be digested and processed by the body as dietary carbohydrate. Therefore, they directly impact blood sugar. You can determine how many net carbs you are eating by subtracting the grams of fibre, glycerine, and sugar alcohols from the total grams of carbohydrate. Net carbs are the only carbs that you need to count when you are on low-carb diets, such as the Atkins diet. It is important to understand why fibre does not count as a regular carbohydrate.

  • Lo Carb Diets Can Assist You Rapid Weight Loss - Lo carb diets are the newest dieting trend, and seem to be effective. Here are some tips for following a balanced lo carb diet: Eat more fruit and vegetables, aiming for at least five portions a day. Include fruit at breakfast and salad at lunch. Reduce the amount of salt by eating less processed food, such as ready meals, and adding a smaller amount of salt to food. Eat a varied diet. Change your shopping list every week to help keep you out of unhealthy food ruts and make eating more enjoyable.
  • Stoke Your Body's Furnace With Low Carbohydrate Food - Though there are many different low carbohydrate diet plans, they are based on the same principles. When carbohydrates (such as starches and sugars) are consumed, the body's blood sugar level rises. To counteract high blood sugar levels, the body releases insulin, which in turn increases fat storage and decreases the body's ability to burn fat. When a low carb dieter restricts carbohydrates, his or her blood sugar is only slightly raised, thus preventing excess insulin production.
