This article explains what Alcoholics Anonymous is all about and how you can deal with addiction.

Although most people think that alcoholics are the same as problem drinkers, the primary distinction between the two is the issue of control. Alcoholics lose the ability to control their drinking while problem drinkers can stop at any time. The real difference is that the alcoholic has an actual physiological dependence.

In recent times, alcoholism itself is being recognized as the primary issue to be dealt with rather than underlying social, psychological or physiological factors that may have caused it. Earlier, these factors were considered primary and alcoholism was secondary to these problems; thus treatment was also in that order of priority.

If you are reading this then you are concerned at the possibility and want to know wheat you can do.

According the NCADD, alcoholism is considered to be a disease and has genetic, social and environmental elements that can both effect and influence its development. Like many other diseases, alcoholism is progressive and can be deadly. Having been deemed as a physiological disease by the American Medical Association (AMA) in 1956, alcoholism remains a continuing threat to the society. In the same way other diseases can be long-term and progressive; alcoholics remain vulnerable to the same characteristics. It has been noted that alcoholism, in serious cases, can lead to death.

Alcoholism is an illness that affects millions of individuals worldwide. The cure, however, for this disease depends widely on the patient's willingness to submit himself for treatment and his total motivation to recover from his addiction.

It is difficult to be dependent to a substance. Alcoholism is one of them. Alcoholics find it hard to stop drinking. Their body craves for the substance and would give into it no matter what: every bottle will be emptied to its last drop, sometimes scavenging for more before bed time. What they go through is testing. Here are some signs of an alcoholic that you may need to know. You or someone you know might be going through this naively.

Alcohol abuse is overrated, while drug abuse is underrated. The DSM manual suggests that substance abuse there are differences in the definition of drug and alcohol use. To confuse matters worse the law has its own version of who is an alcoholic or drug addict. Some of the symptoms that help professionals determine if alcohol and drugs are a problem include, excessive drinking/drugging, problems with the law, withdrawal symptoms, shaking of the hands, and so forth.

Research indicates that smoking "primes" the brain for later addiction to alcohol and perhaps other drugs. Research also demonstrates that smoking and alcoholism result in diminished thinking ability. Since 50 to 80 per cent of alcoholics smoke, then most alcoholics are hurting their mental proficiency due to smoking and drinking. This is especially problematic for youth who smoke and drink.

Alcoholics are sick both in mind and in body...and successful alcohol treatment must heal them on both fronts. As insane as alcoholics can be when in the grips of the disease of alcoholism, the alcoholic may really believe they can still have that first drink the next morning, hoping to yield a different result, maybe they believe they can stop after the first drink or two, maybe they believe they can continue drinking "normally" and not to excess that eventually leads to a blackout.

Quit drinking, improve your relationships and reach your full potential with relative ease. Free MP3 and forum to help you every step of the way to a better future.

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization well-known for helping people with addiction problems. The 12 step program is the operational basis for the organization's program.

Alcoholism is defined as an irresistible urge to consume alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism are very well aware of the dangerous effects alcohol could have on their bodies, but still they are unable to resist the urge to consume it. They will usually drink beyond acceptable limits and will be in an inebriated state most often, causing embarrassment and inconvenience to the people with them.

The things that most alcoholics have in common are that they are secretive, devious and can tell blatant lies without batting an eyelid. This leaves the person living with them wondering whether it is they who are the one with the problem.
