This condition, anagen effluvium, is the sudden loss or shedding of hair as a result of a cause other than the pattern baldness that's usually responsible. It can be the result of surgery, cancer treatment, ingestion of toxic substances, nutritional deficiencies or other medications.

Hair loss in women is starting to become common enough that it is now being called "female pattern hair loss". This is a fairly all-encompassing term because there are so many reasons that a woman can lose hair. Male hair loss has been easily explained for years, having its basis in the behavior of a set of hormones called androgens. The androgens are testosterone, androsteinedione, and dihydrotestosterone and are also found in the female body in much smaller amounts that in men. There are many things that can make a woman lose her hair.

It has come to a time where female hair loss is no longer a stranger to society. There are several common causes of to this unsightly condition. The most common cause for hair loss among women is androgenetic alopecia, a genetically-caused cosmetic disorder, which is related to the androgen hormones. While androgens are related to hair growth, a particular androgen called DHT (dihydrotesterone) is found to be a contributing factor to pattern baldness, hence the term 'alopecia', which refers to hair loss.

Our hair is made of a type of protein called keratin. A single hair consists of a hair shaft (the part that shows), a root below the skin, and a follicle, from which the hair root grows. At the lower end of the follicle is the hair bulb, where the hair's color pigment, or melanin, is produced.

The hair cycling procedure parallels morphogenesis in that it involves multiple signalling events incorporating developmental pathways.
