Due to its geographical location, Thai culture has always been greatly influenced by India and China as well as the neighbouring cultures of south east Asia. The first Thai state is traditionally considered to be the Buddhist kingdom of Sukhothai founded in 1238. A century later, the larger Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya overshadowed Sukhothai’s power. Ayuthaya fell in 1767 to Burmese forces.

Otherwise you can encounter some serious problems that could affect your holidays. There are two main charter types - bareboat charter and crewed charter. For bareboat charter at least one person on the board must have a boat leader's license. The license must me issued by a state institution. If a license is certified by a foreign state institution the Croatian law accepts it in most cases. The license must be related to the sea and open waters and not to the rivers and channels. Law in Croatia does not accept any Sailing Club Certifications.

In the summer months the north usually sees the Meltemi from the NNE - NE. But unlike the rest of the Aegean it is by no means guaranteed and if it does not blow winds are usually light and from the south. The prevailing wind in the south of the area is from the SE and it will blow from midday before calming in the evening. It usually does not exceed force 5.
  • Sailing the Gulfs of Corinth and Patras in Greece - The prevailing winds in the summer months are from the west. It will blow from midday well into the evening. It may reach force 6 in July and August. In the spring and autumn winds will come from the east or west dependent on conditions in the adjacent Aegean or Ionian. The gulf of Patras is prone to thunderstorms in spring and autumn with attendant waterspouts.
  • Sailing in the Western Peloponnisos - The wind in the Western Peloponnisos during the summer months is predominately from the NW. It gets up around noon and dies down in the evening. As you progress further south the wind is more from the W - SW. The winter months from October to April sees winds predominately from the SE. The coast of the Western Peloponnisos is in the most part high, rugged mountains, still often snow capped in the spring. The two principal ranges, Taiyetos and Parnon, run south ending at the capes of Matapan and Malea respectively. Peloponnisos was originally an island but great geological upheavals united with the mainland.
  • Sailing the Saronic Gulf - As far as history goes the Saronic Gulf and surrounding areas were always under the influence and domination of Athens. During the time of Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic period and the Roman occupation the whole area prospered.

There are limited problems with gusts from high land. Astrous on the Peloponnisos is renowned for a katabatic wind at night. It gets up quickly from calm conditions and can blow a force 7 for up to 6 hours.

With a history going back over a thousand years, it first appeared on the political map of Europe in 1992, following the break up of Yugoslavia after a bloody civil war. Weather - The climate is typical of the Mediterranean and provides for pleasant holidays throughout the year. The best season for sailing in Croatia is early summer with good winds in May and June mainly from the S/SE.

The Odyssey tells the storey of Odysseus and his travels and adventures throughout the Mediterranean in around 800BC. The Trojan War concluded when the Greeks sucseeded into bringing a wooden horse into the city of Troy. Greek soldiers were hidden inside and opened the city gates to the Greek army who sacked the city. Odysseus and the other Greeks could know return to their kingdoms across the sea. To say Odysseus's journey was eventful is rather understating the matter. On departing Troy in what is now north west Turkey he sails south through the Aegean Sea.
  • Yacht Charter in the Southern Ionian Sea - Levkas is a popular, lively and windy island. It is the only island linked to mainland Greece, a swing bridge providing access by road. The airport at Preveza is only a 30 minute ride away. Lefkas Town lies a short distance down the canal, at the point where the canal turns to run SE. The buildings of the town are easily seen and the harbour is not difficult to locate.
