Primary biliary cirrhosis is an inflammation (irritation and swelling) of the bile ducts of the liver resulting in narrowing and obstruction of the flow of bile. This obstruction damages liver cells. Primary biliary cirrhosis is a disease that slowly destroys the liver’s bile ducts. Bile is a substance produced in the liver that helps digest fat in the small intestine and remove toxins from the body. When the ducts are damaged, bile builds up in the liver and damages liver tissue. Biliary cirrhosis can develop over time and may cause the liver to stop working.

Primary biliary cirrhosis is a rare form of biliary cirrhosis of unknown origin, occurring without obstruction or infection of the major bile ducts, sometimes developing after the administration of such drugs as chlorpromazine and arsenicals. Affecting chiefly middle-aged women, it is characterized by chronic cholestasis (accumulation of bile in the liver) with pruritis, jaundice, and hypercholesterolemia with xanthomas, and malabsorption.

The specialists recommend dandelion for treating liver diseases, even in extreme cases of cirrhosis. This herb is also used for pancreas, stomach, spleen and kidney afflictions. It is also used in cases of anemia and it can help reduce arterial tension. Dandelion is an important source of potassium and because of this property the herb is considered a natural diuretic.

Caroli disease is a nonobstructive dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts. This is a rare congenital disorder that classically causes saccular ductal dilatation, which usually is segmental. Caroli disease is associated with recurrent bacterial cholangitis and stone formation.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. If left untreated, it could cause cirrhosis of the liver.

Cirrhosis refers to the replacement of damaged liver cells by fibrous scar tissue which disrupts the liver's important functions. Cirrhosis occurs as a result of excessive alcohol intake (most common), common viral hepatitis, obstruction of the bile ducts, and exposure to certain drugs or toxic substances.

Milfoil, 'Achillea millefoilum', came from Europe and western Asia. This herb has many medicinal uses and it is recommended in different illnesses of the stomach and intestines, like entero-colitis and gastritis. It calms the stomachal colics, helps the elimination of flatulencies and stimulates the appetite (because of the bitter compound achileine – contained especially in the leaves).

Gallstones are solid lumps or stones that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They are formed when some of the chemicals stored in the gallbladder harden into a mass. About one in three women and one in five men have gallstones by the age of 75. Some people get just one large stone; others may have lots of tiny ones. Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below your liver in the right upper abdomen. Gallstones form when liquid stored in the gallbladder hardens into pieces of stone-like material.

Liver failure can result from any type of liver disorder, including viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver damage from alcohol or drugs such as acetaminophen. Symptoms partly depend on the type and the extent of liver disease. In many cases, there may be no symptoms. Signs and symptoms that are common to a number of different types of liver disease include...

Gallstones are the stones which occur and form in the gall (bile). Initially people having gallstones are not aware of their problem as they don't face with any problem or symptoms. Majority of people in the initial stages are unaware of their gallstones as the gallstones are "silent". The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact. No vaccine against hepatitis C is available. The symptoms of infection can be medically managed, and a proportion of patients can be cleared of the virus by a long course of anti-viral medicines. Although early medical intervention is helpful, people with HCV infection often experience mild symptoms, and consequently do not seek treatment. An estimated 150-200 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C.

Jaundice occurs when excess amounts of bilirubin circulating in the blood stream causes a yellowish appearance of the skin and the whites of the eyes. With the exception of physiologic jaundice in the newborn (normal newborn jaundice in the first week of life), all other jaundice indicates overload or damage to the liver, or inability to move bilirubin from the liver through the biliary tract to the gut.

The hepatitis C virus is usually detectable in the blood within one to three weeks after infection, and antibodies to the virus are generally detectable within 3 to 12 weeks. Approximately 15-40 per cent of persons infected with HCV clear the virus from their bodies during the acute phase as shown by normalization in liver function tests (LFTs) such as alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) normalization, as well as plasma HCV-RNA clearance (this is known as spontaneous viral clearance).

Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder, which is fatal unless early detected and treated. It is a rare condition, where excess copper builds up in the body causing copper poisoning. Wilson's disease is quite uncommon and affects 1 in 30,000 people. It is named after Dr Samuel Wilson, who first described the disorder in 1912.

Primary liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma refers to cancer originating from the cells of the liver or supporting tissue.
