Lyme disease: a bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a spirochete. The disease is most common in the United States and in Europe. In United Stare the actual name of the bacterium is Borrelia burgdorferi, whereas in Europe, another bacterium, Borrelia afzelii, also is known to cause Lyme disease. It is tick transferred disease i.e. some ticks found on deer harbor the bacterium in their stomachs.
