We all hear about bullying in the news these days and its certainly become a hot-button issue with its sometimes tragic consequences. In the worst case scenario murder, suicide or serious injury can result, but in most cases the injuries are psychological in nature. Over 30 per cent of youth or 5.7 million children admit to being a bully or being bullied. In truth, the total is probably much higher. As a society we owe it to our children to confront this problem and provide all students and faculty with appropriate training on how to confront and to halt bullying.

There are dogs out there that bully other dogs when in a "doggie environment", such as a dog park, dog daycare, or a beach area designated for dogs and their owners. Often, bullying takes place in large groups, regardless of the size. Most of these dog bullies are of the large breed and prey on smaller dogs, although there are also smaller breeds with a strong, dominant personality whom bully on other dogs of all sizes.

No matter what anyone says, verbal abuse is still abuse. Sadly, people are all too ready to dismiss it as if it were nothing; hence, there aren't enough discussions on how to stop verbal abuse. But when somebody calls you names or screams at you for no apparent reason, that's abuse. When a person bullies you at work or taunts you incessantly, that's abuse.

Workplace bullying has become a huge problem. So much so, that local, state and the federal government are being compelled to provide protection for employees. There are no federal laws against workplace bullying and many companies do little or nothing about. However, like sexual harassment handling bullies is getting more attention because it is proving to be bad for business.

As a society, we spend too much of our energy identifying and punishing the bully that we fail to spend enough time empowering the victims of bullying. We should spend more of our energy on the things that we can control rather than the things we have limited or no control over.

Though the motivation for their acts differs, the outcome is more or less similar; to make their victim insignificant. In this article I've tried to compile the five different forms of bullying that we see in our schools today.
