A child has been compared to a flower. Look at a newborn child. The child knows nothing about the world. It is so innocent of the world and surprised that how it is in this place. All these months, it was so protected in the mother's womb and suddenly in the world of light yes, the child is surprised. But worse may be yet to come for the unfortunate children of the world. We talk of physical abuse. We also talk of emotional abuse. Let us now talk about self-abuse. What is self-abuse? Normally when we talk of any abuse, an outside agent is involved.

Families exist in different shapes and sizes all across the world. Thus it becomes difficult to have a single law that would take care of all the issues regarding a family. Family laws are hence quite complex in nature. Actually family law is that branch of law which covers each and every aspect of domestic issues between parents, children, husbands, wives and domestic partners.

Some authorities say that up to 60 percent of psychiatric patients, both in-patient and out-patient, report childhood histories of physical or sexual abuse or both. This estimate excludes emotional abuse and neglect. My experience confirms that very many patients are suffering from PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) as a direct result of childhood maltreatment. But they do not know what their real problem is. And worse, they often get the insulting diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder!

Over the last few years many studies have been done concerning various forms of child and youth victimization. These studies have included; physical and sexual abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, exposure to community violence and the witnessing of domestic violence. What's scary about all these studies is the end result.

Substance abuse is the overindulgence in and dependence of a drug or other chemical leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare of others. Substance abuse may be a contributing factor for between one-third and two-thirds of maltreated children in the child welfare system.

Nursing home abuse is becoming one of the greatest challenges that we may face. At some point of time it may affect us in one way or the other, whether it may be a friend or a family member or even our self.

We live in the twenty-first century, and there are still children here who are abused on a daily basis. In fact, studies indicate that four children die every day as a result of abuse and neglect.
