Shingles made from slate eventually became more common in the northern part of the country. Even today, most French roof tiles are likely to be tile shingles.

Centuries later, when Spain was an imperial power in her own right, settlers and merchants who followed the conquistadores carried these Mediterranean roof tiles all over the world. Today, fine examples of Spanish clay roof tiles can be found in New Orleans, St. Augustine, Southern California and anywhere else that the Spaniards settled between 1500 and 1800.

At its height in the 16th and 17th Centuries, the Spanish Empire spanned the globe - which is why Spanish clay roof tiles are found almost everywhere their galleons sailed. In the U.S., Spanish roof tiles are most commonly found in former colonies such as Southern California, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Initially used only for palaces and the homes of the wealthy, terra cotta tiles of this type appear to have started replacing thatched roofs of commoners approximately 2500 years ago.
