There are some truly heinous websites floating around cyberspace: the overly colorful, overly "flashed" and the overly textual. The sad thing is, the designers who create these god-awful sites not only get away with such bad design (they were uploaded, weren't they?) but they were paid thousands of dollars to do it. As mentioned in Finding the Right Web Designer for Your Business, there are plenty of designers happy to show off their "expertise" by creating flashy websites that appeal to fellow design geeks, but these result in sites of very little substance, which leads to very little traffic, which leads to very little revenue.

The economic challenges of the past couple of years have carved a new business landscape, opening new perspectives about the way we market our products and handle the many bits or bytes of information we need to operate our businesses. While economic trends may still fall short of expectations, recent technological trends have given us more marketing choices, improved CMS technology and more space in which to compete.

This article is the fourth installment of Dave Powell's series, "Documentation and e-Learning." School teachers know that reality is one of the greatest instructors. Chem-class explosions, telescope observations, and biology field trips can generate faster real learning than textbooks. And the discovery and adventure that accompany such experiences are powerful drivers for inspiring students to continue learning. Some e-Learning products and materials might even be more effective if they also pulled real-time, real-world data and videos into student training.

Many technical considerations come into play when deploying online video content. It can be difficult to weed through all the techno-babble around video formats and codecs. Fortunately, the tools in the Flash platform make it relatively easy to set up videos and compress them for online use. In addition, all of the video software in the Adobe Creative Suite has features that support processing and delivering online videos.

Many e-Learning and documentation developers have already noticed that our audiences don't have as much patience for extended content as in the past. There are probably a couple reasons.

Many in the e-Learning industry know that "AICC" is not only a standard... but also the committee that defines it. The AICC, Aviation Industry Computer-based training (CBT) Committee, was formed in 1988 by aviation manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus, and McDonnell-Douglas to standardize the delivery of CBT at a time when multimedia training was becoming increasingly popular. And over the years, AICC implementations have spread to many other industries.

Companies and organizations today use web conferencing in many aspects of their organizations-to conduct meetings, collaborate on projects, demonstrate products and services, and more. Learning to use web conferencing technology is pretty easy, but there is a lot more to training via web conference than just putting on a headset, dialing up an audio-conferencing bridge, and logging onto the application.

On-the-job training (OJT) is common in both large and small organizations. It is usually done informally, with an experienced colleague or mentor overseeing or teaching the trainee. It may take place in a classroom, on the plant floor, or in any other place where work is being performed.

I would bet that if you ask most people today about the threat of Polio, many would tell you that the disease was knocked out decades ago because of a standard vaccination regimen now required for children. Yet, there was an outbreak of Polio in Minnesota last year and the disease exists in other countries all over the planet - and this is how I think about e-Learning build vs. buy decisions.

For several years now, I've been writing poetry. The local poet who taught our class showed us a huge variety of poetic "forms": ABeCeDarius, Acrostic, Anaphora, Ars Poetica, Blank Verse, Crown of Sonnets, Eclogue, Haiku, Internal Rhyme, Nested Word, Ode, Pantoum, Rondelet, Sestina, Shape Verse, Triolet, Villanelle...just a few of the thousands of poetic forms out there. And the drumbeat mantra that helps to differentiate all of them from plain old ordinary prose is: "Show, Don't Tell."
