We have a history of fascination with home ownership and house prices in the UK. The cyclic nature of the boom bust economy has continued, albeit with a few deviations. The knock on effects of this can be quite far-reaching and in some areas have meant some dramatic and sometimes ugly side effects. The recent house price index released by the Halifax banking group has shown that Cornwall has undergone some of the highest rises experienced in the whole of the UK. During the period between 1999 and 2009 one local town in Cornwall experienced the highest house price rises of the whole of the UK. Many who know Cornwall might guess this was a town like Truro or Padstow.

As a BMW diesel owner you have a number of options if you are planning to increase the performance of your car. There are a large range of BMW diesel models, and though the details of each model differ, the choice to make is the same whether you own a 320d, 330d, or a 535d. Broadly speaking if you are looking at retuning your car then you will most likely be looking at re-mapping the fuel injection system of the car, and therefore achieving a more efficient burn, more power, and perhaps even better fuel economy too.

If you are looking to buy property in the UK, you will no doubt be interested to hear which areas have the lowest crime rates. It turns out that the safest place to live in the UK is actually the Isles of Scilly, with the lowest crime rate in the country. These islands, near to south-western Cornwall, recorded only six burglaries and 12 offences of criminal damage in 2009, while some types of crimes, for example, vehicle crime, were non-existent, reflecting the minimal road infrastructure on the islands.

I have always been a great admirer of the artist John Miller. His simplistic coastal landscapes are a wonderful escape from the rigours of city life in Birmingham.

But what of the subjects of his work? Were they just figments of his imagination or did these places actually exist?

There's nothing that quite compares to a bracing winter walk. During summer, the sea might be more enticing, you can stop off for numerous ice creams en route and meander in shorts and t-shirt as the sun warms your skin; but at the same time, it's hot, clammy, you're often jostling for position on the busy coast path, and parking at the start of the route can be somewhat problematic. No such problem today.

One of my favourite places in England sits in the far south-westerly reaches of the country, amongst the myths and legends of Cornish past. St Ives is a beautiful little harbour town, largely unspoilt by commercialisation. Resting at the northern tip of the A3074 (off the A30) in western Cornwall, St Ives is not easily accessible for the majority of the country but is well worth the effort.
