  • What Are You Grateful For? - How often do you ask yourself and others this powerful question? Sadly, many of us don’t take the time to ask or answer this question on a regular basis. There are many reasons we have for not focusing on gratitude. We’re too busy... we’re waiting for things to work out “perfectly”... we don’t want to brag or be obnoxious... we focus on what needs improvement and all of the things we still have to do...we feel funny or get embarrassed... and on and on. These “reasons,” while understandable, are all just excuses. Jack Canfield, author of The Success Principles and co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, says that gratitude is the single most important ingredient to living a successful and fulfilled life.
  • Let's Appreciate Ourselves - In my years as a college and professional baseball player I learned many things. I became a master, along with many of my teammates, at being hard on myself and “never being satisfied.” These were traits taught to me, directly or indirectly, by those around me. I was told that if I was hard enough on myself and I never got “complacent,” I would be successful in baseball and in life. However, when my career ended abruptly due to injury, I realized looking back on my 18 years in competitive baseball that I had only one regret.
  • How to Give Great Compliments - A genuine and powerful compliment is one of the best gifts we can give another human being. Think of some of the compliments you have received in your life... they stick out in your mind and resonate deep within your heart, don’t they? The best part about compliments is that they are free and easy - we can give them all the time and they don’t take much on our part. As easy as they are to give, many of us have a hard time effectively giving compliments to others. Whether it is because we are too busy, we forget to do it, we feel awkward and uncomfortable, or we just can’t find the right time or the right words, many of us struggle with the simple and powerful act of acknowledging others.
  • Focus on the Good Stuff at Work - Have you ever had something taken away from you only to realize how much you appreciated it after it was gone?
  • Focus on the Good Stuff: The Power of Appreciation - Have you ever had something taken away from you only to realize how much you appreciated it after it was gone? I often ask this question when I start one of my talks or seminars on appreciation. As I pause and wait for people to respond, many hands go up. Most of us have taken someone or something for granted. We only truly realized how much that person or situation meant to us after the fact. For example, at the age of twenty three my professional baseball career ended abruptly when I blew out my pitching arm.
  • Be More Easily Impressed - Does it take a lot for you to be impressed? If so, you're like most of us. Not getting too impressed with employees, co-workers, or things in general seems to be a sign of intelligence, experience, and sophistication in today's world. We're often least impressed with ourselves. The three most common reasons I hear from people about why they aren't that easily impressed are, 1) They often focus on the most negative aspects of things, others, and themselves, 2) They don’t want to seem gullible or naïve, and 3) They're waiting for something REALLY amazing, so they’re holding out on being totally impressed until someone or something knocks their socks off. I'm not advocating that we walk around pretending to be impressed with mundane things or with the mediocrity of other people in some phony way.
  • Appreciating “Difficult” People - Are there people in your life, on your team, and/or with whom you interact regularly that get on your nerves? Have you ever found yourself wanting to yell at the top of your lungs, “Knock it off, I can’t stand you?” If so, you are not alone...welcome to being human!
  • Appreciating Conflict - "When you hear the word "conflict", what thoughts or feelings do you immediately have? If you’re like me and most people I know and work with, this word conjures up thoughts of arguments, fights, violence, and even war, along with feelings of stress, fear, anger, defensiveness, and more. However, if we take a moment to think and feel on a deeper level, there are lots of positive aspects of conflict as well. When conflict is effectively dealt with and resolved, creative ideas are generated, new opportunities open up, and deeper connections are made. Think about all of the positive benefits that have come out of some of the biggest conflicts you’ve ever had. The problem, therefore, isn’t with conflict itself; it’s our resistance to it and fear of it that makes it difficult.
  • A Little Bit of Appreciation Goes a Long Way - Oprah Winfrey is one of the most successful and influential people in the world today. Her life-story of the difficulty, poverty, abuse, teen pregnancy, and pain that occurred in her early years are well-known and documented. For the first six years of her life, the young Oprah Winfrey was raised on a Mississippi farm by her grandmother. Oprah has stated that living with her grandmother probably saved her life. While in her grandmother's care, she was taught to read at a very early age, instilling a love of reading in her that she retains today. Oprah has said that she heard her grandmother state on several occasions that she was ""gifted."" While the young child didn't know exactly what being ""gifted"" meant, she thought that it meant that she was special.
