The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) helps protect you from a credit repair scam while also allowing you to receive help with your credit repair efforts. Understanding the basics of CROA is a good starting point when shopping for a credit repair service.

If you have negative information in your credit file, as reflected by the Big Three reporting companies, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, proves to be accurate, there is little you can do about it. Only the passage of time will guarantee that information's ultimate removal from your file. The reporting companies will generally list negative credit information for seven years, and bankruptcy information will remain on your report for ten years.

The credit reporting agencies are required by federal law to remove inaccurate information from your credit reports free of charge. However, nowhere in the law does it say they have to make it easy for you. Because the credit reporting agencies can't charge you to remove inaccurate information from your credit reports, they make you jump through hoops... climb over walls... and inconvenience you in any way possible to accomplish this.

According to the US Public Interest Research Group, one quarter of the credit reports ordered contained errors. You can order a copy of your credit from three credit reporting agencies - Experian, Trans Union and Equifax.

The reality is that there are a number of credit repair scams, and there are a lot of credit repair companies that are not scams, but seriously underperform for their clients.
